NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. — A prosecutor has agreed to dismiss a disorderly conduct charge against the assistant adjutant general of the Rhode Island Army National Guard after the general completed 28 hours of community service.

Brig. Gen. Brian W. Goodwin was charged last month with yelling obscenities at police officers who were interviewing his wife and son about an assault reported by his son.

Goodwin’s son’s jaw was broken during a fight with three other young men, police said.

Police were questioning the younger Goodwin and his mother about discrepancies in their statements when, according to a police report, Goodwin became so upset that one police lieutenant reached for his pepper spray.

“I felt that the offender’s actions were threatening, disruptive, and I thought he was about to attack me physically,” police Lt. Stephen E. Riccitelli said in his report.

Police decided not to arrest Goodwin because they did not want to make the situation worse. Goodwin later arranged to turn himself in.
