Army making progress in Baghdad despite heavy losses for 2nd Cavalry

Roadside bombs and small-arms fire in Baghdad have taken the lives of seven 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment soldiers in the Past two weeks.

Still, their brothers-in-arms have had recent success in locating weapons, bombs, and bomb-making material and taking it out of enemy hands, Army sources are reporting.

In Baghdad’s East Rashid District on Monday, members of Company G, 3rd Squadron, 2nd SCR, during anti-al-Qaida operations, were able to locate a building rigged to detonate. The resulting explosion damaged only the building, Multi–National Division–Baghdad public affairs reported in a release.

On Oct. 4, members of 2nd SCR, in conjunction with paratroops from the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., were able to successfully capture six suspected enemy fighters without firing a shot or causing an injury.

The next day, 3rd Squadron troops located several homemade bombs in various states of readiness, including a lethal fire extinguisher and an explosive-filled pot.

On Saturday, 3rd Squadron troops evacuated several residents in the Dora neighborhood and blew up two buildings that had been found wired.
