Military Declares Victory Over Al-QaidaUPI.com | October 16, 2007
WASHINGTON - The al-Qaida presence in Iraq is severely crippled, prompting some to declare victory over the group, U.S. military officials and the White House said Monday.
But as military and administration leaders plot the next phase of the war in Iraq, others are warning such a declaration could be premature because the group is resilient, and also could fuel criticism about U.S. presence in Iraq, The Washington Post reported Monday.
"I think it would be premature at this point," a senior intelligence official said of a victory declaration over al-Qaida in Iraq because the group has "the ability for surprise and for catastrophic attacks."
Military and civilian leaders agree the terror group has been hit hard during the past three months, citing a sharp drop in suicide bombings from more than 60 in January to some 30 a month since July.
The statistics, however, are "insufficient and difficult to measure," another U.S. official told the Post.
"AQI is definitely taking some hits," the official said. "There is definite progress, and that is undeniable good news. But what we don't know is how long it will last ... and whether it's sustainable."
