If only you knew what it felt like to hug that golden retriever. I had to shake myself and clear my head after that moment of loss of my faith--that there is no god. I was surprised to find myself thinking that way. The last time that happened was in 1987 when my brother broke his neck in a wreck and became a quadriplegic. I was bargaining with god to reverse time or end his suffering. When you grow up being forced to pray, it is hard to unlearn these ideas.

My dog died in April. I don't feel too good these days, even despite Bush cratering. The death of New Orleans and her people was a nightmare.

4. New Orleans and Iraq

Are the prices we paid for not standing up for our convictions. Political expediency are what lead us here. Playing the short game and not trying to lead.

Even CAR AND DRIVER magazine is red-assing the $hrub in print!

I posted this over in "Editorials," but for those who might have missed it, I'll put it here too.

I thought it was pretty amazing. Yesterday I was at the dentist (argh!) reading the latest CAR AND DRIVER and found this:

There are about 26 million people in Iraq, nearly six million of whom live in Baghdad. All but a small percentage want peace.

But in many ways, we have no one to blame but ourselves for the malcontents.

"We created an insurgency that wasn't here," Col. Pinnell freely admits of the post-invasion days when U.S. administrator L. Paul Bremer ran, or misran, Iraq. "Now it's our job to fix that."

6. Us former believers had it basically beaten into us.

It's a coping mechanism, no doubt. The reality of the universe and its cold, uncaring actions is absolutely overwhelming, and it gives us just a little bit of (false) hope to think that even if we can't control what happens, SOMEONE can, and maybe - just maybe - I can ask that someone for some help.

That's some powerful juice, there, and tough to break out of. I know.
