Anyone have any local meetups for atheists? We have one scheduled tonight (may or may not go). They are not part of any of the official groups (with all their baggage). Just a bunch of atheists meeting together at a restaraunt or bar and talking. It goes a long ways to reassuring that we are not alone in this.

but the only one I can find is through meet up, and it has no organizer. You have to pay $19 / month now to maintain the group.

Or they used to. But, that's all they do - they meet and have discussions.

However, I'm "lucky" enough to have many atheist/secular friends - perhaps because I'm nicely, calmly outspoken (oh, I growl a great deal, believe me!) and live in an area that appreciates secular views. (I live in Fort Lauderdale by choice. I didn't grow up here, have no family here.)
I also have the James Randi Foundation monthly meetings if I need them - all of about a mile from my home. (Wow, that almost sounds like an AA thing!)
For secular folks living outside of such areas, I can also, relate. I spent ten years in Lakeland, Florida - I think it's practically illegal to be an atheist there. I know it's one of the reasons I got divorced - my ex absolutely refused to discuss religion or lack thereof. He thought he was a sinner and going to hell, no matter what. And he's actually a very nice guy - when he isn't drinking and losing his temper.

Let's have dinner. Maybe we can set-up our own Atheist Meet-Up.

7. All that and right in the same town as D. James Kennedy? |
|
Consider yourself lucky to have been able to surround yourself with so many freethinkers in Broward County. Kennedy and the likes of the past Sheriffs of that county make me think you are in a SERIOUS minority.

The national press gives attention to D. James, but, frankly no one pays him much mind around here, or at least, not that I've noticed. Broward is the bluest county in Florida. I'm hard-pressed to find any church/state separation problems here. Sure, there are a few, but nothing that makes one overly nervous, yet.

9. Minnesota Atheists has many meet-ups. |
|
Happy hours, brunches, discussions. I've never been able to go - they are usually a little far for me, plus I've got two young kids which puts a crimp on just about anything.

PA Non-believers has a meeting every month in York and another in Harrisburg. After the meetings, it's pizza and conversation at one of the member's house. I try to attend the one in York when I'm in PA in the winter. It's a breath of fresh air to visit with fellow atheists in the bible belt of Lancaster/York counties.
If you're interested, just google PA non-believers. See you there?
