Sillyness time: Post your favorite song with new lyrics
Here's one that I have:

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high!
There's no land that you've heard of
Heaven is a lie!
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue
But the air's really thin
There's no atmosphere for you!

Or how about:

You've a really big poster with a long history
Of ticking off godless folks like BMUS and me
But that's okay, if that's how you do it
We're gonna take your posts and we'll rip right through it
Hit us with your best shot
Come on and hit us with your best shots (X2)

Fire away!

1. Pat Benetar was a dressed-for-the-part, made-up, pop idol
But I have to give it to her, she wrote some really catchy stuff so I can't say she was a poseur. "Hell is for children" comes to mind.

2. She was a
professional opera singer, I believe.

Not exactly no-talent like the brainless twits on MTV these days.

3. Anybody have all the lyrics for this rewrite?
Jesus hates the little children
All the children of the world!
Red and yellow, black and white,
He starves a million every night,
Jesus hates the little children of the world!

4. Not exactly my favorite, but...
...sort of the way I feel right now...

One post over the line, sweet Jesus
One post over the line
Sittin' here banging my head into the keyboard
One post over the line

Watchin' the ALERTS and DELETES on the screen now,
Just hoping that the believers don't mind,
Sittin' here waiting for the mods to nail me
One post over the line...

6. One of my faves doesn't need a rewrite
Dear god, by XTC

Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I don’t mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
’cause they don’t get enough to eat

From god,
I can’t believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
’cause they can’t make opinions meet,
About god,
I can’t believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Don’t know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it ain’t and so do you,
Dear god,
I can’t believe in,
I don’t believe in,

I won’t believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
You’re always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And it’s the same the whole world ’round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebody’s unholy hoax,
And if you’re up there you’ll perceive,
That my heart’s here upon my sleeve.
If there’s one thing I don’t believe in...

It’s you,
Dear god.

9. That young voice they got to sing the first part was exquisite
It sounds like praying...the lyrics are critical but gentle. Then the adult voice takes over and the song blasts off into blasphemy. Oh, my! The finish is exquisite, too!

Or something like that. It's been awhile since that episode of Pop Up Videos.

11. I like this one, which needs no change

Nice ironic interplay between the old cliche, "in heaven," followed by "I'm in limbo."

The story of a crippled WWII veteran is also wonderfully grim, drab and depressing. And everybody knows how much we atheists like that sort of thing. Heh!

Oh, it's an old Richard Thompson song. Al Bowlly was a British pop singer in the Thirties. He was performing in a night club during the London Blitz of 1940 when a German bomb scored a direct hit on the place and killed him:

We were heroes then, and the girls were all pretty
And a uniform was a lucky charm
Bought you the key to the city
We used to dance the whole night through
While Al Bowlly sang, "The Very Thought of You"
But Al Bowlly's in Heaven, and I'm in limbo now

I gave my youth to King and Country
But what's my country done for me?
But sentence me to misery.
I traded my helmet and my parachute
For a pair of crutches and a demob suit
Al Bowlly's in Heaven, and I'm in limbo now

Hard Times, hard hard times
Hostels and missions and dosser's soup lines
Can't close me eyes on a bench or a bed
For the sound of some battle raging in my head

Old friends, you lose so many,
You get run around all over town.
The wear and the tear of it just drag you down.
St Mungo's, with its dirty old sheets,
Beats standing all day down on Scarborough Street.
Al Bowlly's in Heaven, and I'm in limbo now.

Can't stay here, got to foot slog.
Once in a blue moon, you might find a job.
Sleep in the rain, sleep in the snow,
When the beds are all taken, you've got nowhere to go.

But I can see me now, back there on the dance-floor
With a blond on me arm, a redhead to spare,
Spit on me shoes and shine in me hair.
And there's Al Bowlly, up on the stand,
Yes, that was a voice, and that was a band...
But Al Bowlly's in Heaven, and I'm in limbo now.
