During my Airman Leadership School, I was told by one of my instructors told me that a Chief Master Sergeant had seen my car with the sticker that says "Atheism cures religious terrorism" and asked, "you have an atheist in your class?" I had found that to be a strange comment, since the military isn't a religious institution (despite what the fundies might try to tell you). The instructor is a Catholic, but his wife is atheist, so he was sympathetic to my position.
Last night, I was presented with the John L. Levitow award, which is the highest award granted in Airman Leadership School. To hear my commander and the instructor staff tell it, it's a really big deal. Afterwards, that same instructor approached me and said, "Man, wait until I tell my wife that the atheist in the class won the Levitow...." It was a good night.
With all the stories of oppression on this board, I thought I'd share one rare moment of triumph.

It's always great to hear news like this.
This is interesting, with all the grim news coming out of the Air Force Academy these days. Apparently the Fundies consider the Academy their private property.
Now that I think of it, TWO big stories came out of Colorado Springs at about the same time: the story of Fundie pressure on students/faculty, and the news that some AFA female students had been sexually assaulted and intimidated.
I'm sure there's absolutely no connection between an insanely patriarchal, forgiven-for-everything religious mindset and sexual hijinx.
Nah. Couldn't be. WTF am I thinking...

...I could find myself in a pretty good position to excel in the enlisted corps. I'm becoming an NCO early next year, and once I become a senior NCO, any fundy lieutenants coming out of the Air Force Academy are going to have me to contend with if they get any ideas about how things are run in the Air Force.
Heck, even as a junior NCO I'll be in a position to defend the rights of my fellow Airmen. It'll be an uphill battle, but one well worth fighting.

I like the bumper sticker too. I'm going to have to remember that one for later when the ubber-pious in my family start yammering on about dark-skinned fundamentalists.
