What would Jesus do?
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 02:36 AM by FM Arouet666
I think I have a solution to the current controversy which surrounds this group and the Skeptics group. The atheists have been warned, and to be fair so have the christians, that a level of discourse which requires a respect for divergent opinions will be enforced. We have seen the effect of this edict, and I am sure you will all agree that we would like not to suffer the same fate.

My proposal, we are all familiar with the christian slogan, "What would jesus do?", a christian idiom with an implied usage in times of conflict. To weather the strom of the current controversy, that is exactly what we need here. A slogan, to call into consciousness when faced with radical opposition.

I propose that when you are faced with a religious zealot or a devotee of pseudoscience, a "woo woo", you ask yourself, "What would Spock do?

After all, he is a superior being.....

On edit, never trust your spelling without the spell checker, especially after a few Heineken. :toast:

Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 02:42 AM by FM Arouet666
Yes? Don't get me wrong, logic, in the philosophical sense, pales in comparison to the scientific method. But, I had to include a shameless plug for my favorite show.

3. And I had to respond with my favorite quote
Its so perfect coming from him. But I think he put his (blanking on the name of the award for logic) by lying like that.

4. I wish TOS was more consistent
'The Original Series' tended to have a lot of contradictory moments, almost as bad the the Bible. How is Star Trek ever going to compete with the likes of scientology and christianity if it has so many canonical contradictions?

Actually, in the episode you quoted, Spock is logical in realizing that he can defeat the androids by presenting them with contradictory information, such as the quote about logic. However, he has stated many times that Vulcans cannot lie.

Jesus vs. Spock on the next celebrity death match.

Anyway, got to sleep, I will undoubtedly read in horror the extent to which I exposed my nerd tonight. Good night.......

14. Spock can lie
Spock is not Vulcan; he is half Vulcan and half Human, thus Spock can lie. Or, as he said in Trek VI, "I exaggerated." (Oh, the burden of being the nitpicky Trekker...)

18. That's right, he is only half vulcan
But, alas, he has also stated many times that he is incapable of lying, which as you point out, is a lie. Could it be, Spock is a republican?

10. I hate you, Dr. McCoy
McCoy used to call Spock a "pointy eared hobgoblin" and tell him "he would not know what to do with a compassionate, human thought if he had one" and I hated him. Mr. Spock was my hero. Mr. Spock was logical and scientific, like my idols who built the Apollo rockets. There was Leonard McCoy giving him the business. Hey, I was only 7 when Star Trek was on TV.

At that age, one does not realize it is only theater. A child can watch a show and think it's real.

15. Trekkers! Trekkers!
Puleeze! There is a stringent hierarchy when it comes to the World of Trek. Sadly, I am familiar with the majority of that body of knowledge...

(side note: I am very pleased to note that the DU spell checker has "Trekker" in it. Well done!)

A world ruled by science, no mention of religion except as a quaint custom practiced by primitive cultures... what could an atheist possibly like about Star Trek? ;-)

She did save the universe. Even if she does have a thing for thunder gods.
