More Church and State
been looking for a better link on this but can't find one yet.
It seems that the Salvation Army, which receives 95% of it's funding from the Feds, can screen job applicants on religious views. More of the "Faith Based Funding" * LOVES. Like Head Start.

Very Very disturbing considering how much we are expecting these charities to do for us.

1. Disturbing indeed...
Also disturbing is that the NY ACLU is only "considering" an appeal. I would think an appeal would be obvious. This can't be so open and shut that the ACLU thinks it will lose an appeal.

2. But of course
Which is why I despise the idea of "faith based" charities receiving tax dollars. They practice discriminatory hiring, and discriminatory distribution of services. Therefore they should be ineligible for taxpayers funds.

3. Thanks for the post
"The Salvation Army is a Christian organization and part of the universal Christian Church." From the Salvation Army web site.

I must admit, I have never really given the Salvation Army much thought. Just a place to go dump off old clothes or furniture and the source of annoying panhandlers with a bell and red pot.

My tax dollars funding this, and I suspect many other, religious organizations? The government giving public money to an organization whose mission statement is to proselytize the chistian religion and the ACLU only "considering" a first amendment fight?

Looking more like Jesusland everyday.

4. Yes, but they're being "Persecuted"...
So they need all the leg-ups Il Douche can give them.

The ministry I worked for, they bought an ex-Brazilian AF Lockheed C-130 to fly "mercy missions" of food aid to Africa. I thought that was great, until I was told that uh, sorry, but that food is for African CHRISTIANS ONLY...."Jesus takes care of his OWN, the others can go ask their father the Devil for food..." is how it was explained.

Sickening.

And now there's proposed legslation in Indiana to make "assisted reproduction services" available ONLY to married STR8 couples, and even THEN, their "church life" will be examined and factored into whether or not they get their test tube baby....

A few pearls from your link.

And then this family, which had put so much faith in God, was led by it's Pastor in religious praise. They sang the Christian Doxology.

"Praise God from whom all blessing flow" "Praise Him all creatures here below" "Praise Him above ye heavenly host" "Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."

What an orgy of religious lust...

"The doctors came to Kenny and said, 'The last baby is under some stress.' *Kenny* "We just said we need to start praying about Joel. I just simply sent Pastor to start a prayer chain and we just need to pray."

Yep, bet that worked out just swell. Doctors didn't save little Kenny, it was all the chanting and speaking in tongues that did it. Fuck modern science when you have the power of superstition.

My favorite....

"I know God's in control of each and every individual doctor and nurse and everything and I just knew that she was in good hands."

I get this a lot. I bust my balls to save some poor sod from a leaking aneurysm, and the first thing I hear is that god worked through my hands. What a load of crap. Jesus works through my hands when I jerk off, but his butt stays out of the OR.....

9. "just"
This is a little OT, but looking at the quotes you posted from our sadly-departed intruder, I'm reminded of something I've noticed before:

Why do Christians feel it's appropriate to modify *every fucking verb* with "just"?

We just said we need to start praying about Joel. I just simply sent Pastor to start a prayer chain and we just need to pray.

I know God's in control of each and every individual doctor and nurse and everything and I just knew that she was in good hands.

...

Pay attention; you'll notice they do it all the time. I have no idea why.

10. Hey Bill! I was the "intruder!"
:hi:

We weren't invaded. I posted a link about the McCaughey family--the famous septuplets.

That's where FM's quotes came from.

Apparently I annoyed someone with a Fertility Fetish, and my post was deleted.

Sorry! It all makes more sense now. But now I *really* want to know what you said.

Damn fertility fetishists.

13. OK, I think I can do this...
...if I leave out the profanity and personal musings about the McCaugheys.

:hide:

I ranted about how that couple went around to high-tech fertility clinics for YEARS.

But after all that, when their kids were born, the McCaugheys didn't give one particle of thanks to medical science. Jesus and Gawd got all the credit, and the whole thing was a "miracle!!!"

14. I think you hit it on the head. The original link
I was surprised to see your post expunged, and tried to recall what was so offensive. Your disparaging remarks regarding the family may have been OT. However, I think the topic should be discussed, especially in an atheist forum.

As society is pushed toward a fundamentalist christian world view, conflict with science becomes more common. This story highlights a symptom of the problem, failure to acknowledge science in favor of a religious view, despite the obvious scientific contribution.

Without further comment, here is the original link

And here are a few links which are critical of the whole affair.

So I could repost it.

See what I mean? Alerting and deleting that post just proves my main thesis...

70% of our population believes those stories in that old book, yet they're the ones being persecuted and silenced.

Go ahead and alert on THIS.

FWIW, I think people who have HUGE families in these days of dwindling resources and overpopulation are taking food out of my mouth and heat off my old bones when I get older.

Selfish, in other words.
