What does "In God We Trust" supposed to mean?
Edited on Fri Nov-19-04 12:40 PM by IMModerate
Even if i were a believer I have trouble making sense of this phrase. Anyone know a context or situation where it could apply?

2. According to this page, it's an artifact of the McCarthy era, which
means it's pretty much the same story as how "under God" wound up in our Pledge.

3. I think it's like the "compassion" crap, you can translate it into
"I'm ripping you off, but, believe me, it's not about money".

It appears that no one here can really decipher this. I had hoped (not really) that someone could tell me what we could trust god to do. Since the various testaments picture an entity that is volatile, vain, impetuous and unpredictable, it's hard to rely on god for anything.

I guess some freeper site would have an answer. But I don't think I could hang on there long enough to find out.

6. There's no rationale: you JUST TRUST
What more is there to say. The whole line is usually, Trust in God, and he will provide. Apparently, he's the one providing those bills, too. I'd like to ask Him why He's devaluing them so much lately.

7. Given the reason the phrase was added to our money in the first place,
I can only think it must mean that we trust God to deliver us from the "godless heathen" Commies. :)

8. I would say that is correct. The "under God" was added
to the Pledge as a sort of political statement. The Reds were (officially) atheist, and so we set about emphasizing the fact that "we" (supposedly) were *not* atheists.

I'm sure that the "in god we trust" on the dollar was the same story. Really, amazingly petty. "na! na! *we* believe in God, see? We'll put it right on our dollar! Take *that* commies!"

The 1950s equivalent of "freedom fries". Oh well, at least we didn't put something like "We hate France!" on our five-dollar bill.

10. I went into a restaurant that featured "freedom fries"
I made it a point to order "impeachment fries."
