A watershed moment in modern American political history
Ten years from now, political historians will mark Sunday night's Compassion Forum as a watershed moment in modern American political history. It wasn't the answers from the politicians that made the event such an historic experience - truth be told, there weren't any earth-shattering revelations or memorable one-liners. It was questions that were asked, who was asking them and who was answering.

...

But the watershed moment wasn't what that columnist thought. It was when Barack Obama was asked:

"Senator, if one of your daughters asked you -- and maybe they already have -- Daddy, did God really create the world in six days? What would you say?"

:banghead: 'Watershed moment', 'jumped the shark', 'crossed the credibility horizon and disappeared up its own singularity' - whatever you want to call it, I think that marked the moment when the American political process finally gave up all pretence at being run by grown-ups, and sat down and sucked its thumb. Diebold will be along to change its diapers shortly.

1. Frustrating ...
the candidates step up to talk about myths and subjective beliefs but have yet to step up to the calls for a debate on science (www.sciencedebate2008.com)

2. Yep.
And there are plenty of people even HERE on DU who seem to think scientific debate isn't important. I can't tell you how aggravated I've gotten in the science forum of late..the amount of religious woo thats appeared there has been..a bit disconcerting to say the least..We live in a country where its much more important to know Gawd than to know how the world actually works...

4. What is it about this campaign and religion?!
One of the core issues that Bush* has ignored is the constitutionally protected separation of church and state, and the Democrats, and even some of the Republicans, who are vehemently opposed to his agenda, say that the next president has to clean up his horrific mess... Even the previous Pope was highly critical of him for his idiotic and warmongering decision to invade Iraq.:eyes:

You'd think that the Democrats would know better, but no such luck. I once tuned into CNN, looking for something to watch. It was a series of interviews with the Democratic candidates, but it was on religion, and John Edwards, Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton talked about how religious they are! Isn't that one of the huge problems with Bush*, that he claims that God told him to invade Iraq?! You'd think that they'd try and move as far away from this nonsense as possible...

And then there are the Republicans. *sigh* I caught a few minutes of one of the early debates where the various candidates were all trying to outdo each other on how literally that they take the Bible... What does that have to do with anything?!:wtf:
