Cats and Dogs
"Owners of dogs will notice that if you provide them with Food, water Shelter and love; They will think you are god..

Whereas owners of Cats are compelled to realize that if you provide them with Food, water, Shelter and love; They will draw the conclusion that they are god.(Cats may sometimes share the warm entrails of a kill with you, but this is just what a god might do if he was in a good mood.)"

From "The Portable Atheist" - Christopher Hitchens; page: xvi

1. Hitchens is always a great read
even when he's infuriatingly dense.

My cat doesn't think she's god, but she knows she's my equal. Doing time in a shelter must've given her a certain amount of humility.

2. That sounds familiar
I'm not sure that's original. To be fair, it's the sort of eternal truth which you'd expect to be restated time and again in slightly different ways. Though he's not quite right: the cat already knows that s/he's god. Your providing food etc just demonstrates that you acknowledge that fact.

3. That's an old joke
I heard it many years ago, and it didn't come from Hitchens.

4. Who'd have thought Hitchens LOLs at cats?

9. I didn't make a note
Just did a google image search on "Christopher Hitchens", but I didn't take any notice of the context. If you do this, beware: there's at least one NSFW Hitchens photo out there!

6. My parents' Shiba Inu (a pedigreed puppy prince)
has a little God-complex--his whims are to be obeyed, his cute is to be praised. But we just say he's got cat-like tendencies. :)

7. Despite his political leanings, I've always found Hitchens to be...
...an excellent read. I wish I had one-tenth of his talent as a writer.
