Why am I having to argue this point
over and over again?
Are we really so ignorant?
Perhaps I'm just overreacting because I'm very tired today.
Or do others as feel as discouraged as I do?

1. Total disconnect from reality
It goes hand and hand with religious fundamentalism I think.

You can't be paying attention and fully understanding you're experiences in reality to buy into the fundy belief system.

And once you're there what's a little matter of the facts of sexual reality when it comes to condoms?

You raised a lot of good points about the reality of the situation but it wont fit his worldview so it makes no impression. I would also add that IMHO abstinence simply will not work for the large majority of people (this is speculation on my part I know). Human beings are sexual creatures, it's a fundamental drive that is related to the survival of the species, to expect all people at all times to be abstinent is unrealistic in itself not to mention all the facts you raised some of which have more to do with violence and power than sex.

BTW: I'm enough of a geek to be somewhat offended that someone like that uses the DU name of "James T Kirk".

2. Actually, your belief that
abstinence is not an effective form of disease prevention is backed up by plenty of evidence.
The same can be said of using it as a method of birth control.

And I also resent the use of the name of one of Gene Roddenberry's characters by someone who obviously never learned a thing from watching Star Trek.
I helped bury a troll that used the name of the Captain in vain, it was a very satisfying experience.

3. Because they desperately need to please their sky-god.
And by parrotting the same phrases over and over, the magic is supposed to get stronger and they'll be more likely to get let into the end-of-the-universe party.

4. Every time I hear something like that
I think of the rabidly devoted fans of the president impersonator in the white house.

7. Another good analogy.
I love the Amish who live around here. They would never dream of foisting their religious beliefs on the rest of the world.
It still trips me out whenever I see a horse and buggy waiting for the light to change in the middle of traffic.
The women all wear simple dresses and bonnets in pastel colors but usually with sneakers.
Their children are exceptionally well behaved and polite.
And some of them use cell phones.
The so-called religious right could learn a lot from the Amish.

Well, I guess when life hands you such a geeky existence that the big-hearted girl who'd give a courtesy fuck to Godzilla won't look at you...

18. You (and others) are having to argue the point over and over
because fundies are ignoramuses. They want to ruin sex (and everything pleasurable/enjoyable) for the world. Arguing with them is very much like banging one's head against a wall.:banghead:

I posted a reply on the other thread, for what it is worth.

19. I saw that.
Excellent post.
It IS like banging your head against the wall. I hope at least one person checks out the articles and will start to question why the church is doing this.
Muriel's post was also right on the money.

20. I don't know how he made the jump
from abstinence being the best safety belt to marriage being the best safety belt. Unless you're going to laminate the marriage certificate and wrap it around yourself for protection, that's not an effective barrier.

“In some settings, it appears marriage actually increases women’s HIV risk. In some African countries, adolescent, married 15-19 –year-old females have higher HIV-infection levels than non-married sexually active females of the same age (Glynn et al, 2001).”

21. Me either, but your pointing it out was pretty funny!
Did you notice that even though my posts were about people living in abject poverty in aids-stricken third world countries, each of them kept trying to apply the scenarios to their own lives in order to make my points seem invalid and ridiculous?

That is what these people do EVERY single time.

I used to think it was plain ignorance, but when you present someone with that amount of documentation and they STILL don't get it, they're being intentionally obtuse.
