"Veterans for Peace of Louisiana sent 1,000 crosses, plan to put them up in the ditch along the road tomorrow, need volunteers."

I'm all for supporting Cindy and remembering the dead - but no stars, no crescents, no question marks?

My father - an orthodox Unitarian agnostic, proud activist liberal, and Air Force officer - died from cancer he got taking samples of Russian fallout in the late 50's. He would be appalled.

1. No respect.
In this country, you are assumed to be Christian first, and even if you're non-religious, they assume you converted on your deathbed.

Christian, Muslim, Jew, Atheist - ALL have served their country with pride. You must be so proud of your dad.

Crosses are easier to make.

4. I recall that the cross as a grave marker predates the christian era

Easy to make, and the horizontal piece is a convenient place for a label. I suppose in the East they could forego the horizontal piece because they write vertically.

(Hey, I read it on the internet somewhere)

Edit: It was the pagans, after all!

5. Thank you. I've really been bothered by that display,
and wanted to ask if anyone else found it inappropriate. It's kind of like the LDS folks researching their genealogies so they can baptize their ancestors. Nobody is asking the dead if they want to be baptized.
Assumptions make me nuts.

6. If they just wanted to represent the dead,
they could have used simple white markers and I would have no problem with it.

But now people are screaming for blood to avenge the desecration of the crosses, not for the disrespect of dead soldiers.

8. The crosses bother me because they reminded me
...of the freeper/fundy white crosses that the local charismatic catholic church has their little acolytes pound into the ground every year to commemorate all of the "babies murdered in the womb".
For real, they have the Sunday School kids put them up!

I thought the shots of the crosses knocked down by freeper were more powerful than the upright crosses.

I much preferred the "empty boots" imagery.

And I am STILL MAD a full 10 minutes after reading those threads.
I have never been a "fan" of our self annointed DU sage, but now I have developed an active dislike of the chap.
