Kerry's response to a question about the McCain, Warner, Graham compromise in progress: "No torture! The United States of America doesn't torture!" See the Q&A portion of the Pepperdine speech at about 1:03, Fedup posted the link here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=273&topic_id=103761&mesg_id=103761It is an awesome detailed answer!

1. Very emotional as well |

Kerry seemed literally like he was desgusted that it would even be considered.
All of his answers to the questions were so nicely put together. In each he wove his beliefs into his point of view. (He gets extra credit for being polite to the annoying blond Republican girl who clearly thought her abortion question would trap the Senator. His answer was great and it was applauded.
I liked that he was comfortable enough to joke at the beginning of the questions - saying something about "ducking the questions". It was cool that he stayed for more questions after they ran out of time.

I listened to a some of his responses a couple of times, they were awesome! The last response, in which he distinguished between a position and policy, was great!

8. Can't get the video to work! :( |
|
I'm about to go out of town. If there's no transcript available by next week, I'll try another computer and make one.

He said something like "I'm interested in responding to any questions you would like me to duck."

6. i think he likes that stuff more than the compliments |
|
he likes to be challenged and take on people who underestimate him.
i'm sure he likes the compliments also, but unlike some politicians i think he enjoys the tough stuff also.

He comes from a state where we TALK a lot. (Okay, sometimes we get in your face and argue like rabid bull dogs in heat, but you ge the picture.)
My favorite political campaign of all time is still that 1996 race. I wish all eight (yeah 8) of the debates from that race were available for viewing somewhere. That was really something. They started in April and each debate was a cross between a prizefight and Grand Masters chess tournament. (What we had in 2004 for 'debates' was a rout, not a debate. Both sides have to be armed for a real debate and only one side was in '04.) In one corner, Bill Weld, Summa Cum Laude, Harvard & Harvard Law, even though no one remembers the guy ever cracking a book. Say what you will about Big Red, but he was 'wicked smaht.' In the other corner, John Kerry, who is a brilliant man who has idears based on experience on an incredible range of idears. Damn, that was fun. (You guys all have races like that, right?)
Me. Kerry is not the Senator from Massachusetts by accident. He had to explain himself to an electorate that didn't know him. He is actually quite accomplished at it. (I once told Mr. Kerry to his face that I had voted for him every time his name was in front of me on a ballot. He was wicked gracious about it and I couldn't complete the thought. Of course I'm gonna vote for you, you're John Kerry. People like you don't just fall out a trees you know. (Plus, it will be a cold friggin day in hell before I vote for one of Them for that distinguished Senate seat.)
