Kerry: Foley scandal part of GOP 'culture of corruption'

LISA ROSSI
REGISTER AMES BUREAU

October 2, 2006

Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry denounced former Rep. Mark Foley during an appearance in Ames today, shaming him for his explicit communications with a teenage congressional page that emerged last week.

He said he and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, “are just appalled and astonished and angered by the double standard of values.”

“I’m really angry those in a position of responsibility care more about
power and politics than protection of children,” he added.

ABC News has printed excerpts of an explicit instant message exchange between Foley and a male page, where the Florida Republican asks the teen about his masturbation habits and the size of his genitalia. Foley, a Florida Republican, resigned Friday.

Kerry, the Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee and a potential candidate for the nomination in 2008, spoke today before participating in a kickoff event for Political Action Week at Iowa State University.

Kerry wouldn’t predict whether the scandal regarding Foley would directly affect mid-term elections in November, but said it adds to the “Republican culture of corruption,” linking it to what he said were failures responding to Katrina, the war in Iraq and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

1. Kerry links Foley, Katrina, Iraq, Sept.11 to GOP culture of corruption
Please put up in GD - this should get great play BECAUSE it links ALL of it to just the way the Republicans are and how they operate in DC.

2. The Senator could give his 9/19/05 speech again
and just add a paragraph about this Foley incident and it would all be up-to-date.

How many Kedrry was/is right moments do we need?

3. Was that the Brown or Boston speech?

I think it's good that Kerry gave the Pepperdine speech before this. His comment on Folley is the best I've seen - it focused immediately on the kids. (yeah, I know that's exactly what we all would expect.)

But, I thought Santorum said liberal Boston is what drives this disgusting behavior in the church.

5. Gee, I wonder what Santorum would say now
That Foley was born in Massachusetts and that explains it. (He had pervert cooties that following him to Florida. I don't know, I thought being a Repub would sort of innoculate him, but maybe those Mass cooties are just too strong.)

BTW, that was the Brown speech and one of the best he's ever given. He should always give speeches when he is sort of pissed off, they are the best.

4. 'culture of corruption' GOOD
I was worried they'd forgotten how effective those 3 words had been. Glad the Senator has revived it and hope others follow his lead.
