Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry denounced former Rep. Mark Foley during an appearance in Ames today, shaming him for his explicit communications with a teenage congressional page that emerged last week.
He said he and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, “are just appalled and astonished and angered by the double standard of values.”
“I’m really angry those in a position of responsibility care more about
power and politics than protection of children,” he added.
ABC News has printed excerpts of an explicit instant message exchange between Foley and a male page, where the Florida Republican asks the teen about his masturbation habits and the size of his genitalia. Foley, a Florida Republican, resigned Friday.
Kerry, the Democrats' 2004 presidential nominee and a potential candidate for the nomination in 2008, spoke today before participating in a kickoff event for Political Action Week at Iowa State University.
Kerry wouldn’t predict whether the scandal regarding Foley would directly affect mid-term elections in November, but said it adds to the “Republican culture of corruption,” linking it to what he said were failures responding to Katrina, the war in Iraq and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
