In N.H., Kerry throws down gauntlet
At fund-raiser, challenges Bush on Iraq

By James W. Pindell, Globe Correspondent | October 14, 2006

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Senator John F. Kerry, nurturing plans for a second presidential run, sought to recapture support among key Democratic activists last night by offering his strongest words yet on President Bush's Iraq policy.

In his keynote address to the largest fund-raiser of the year for the Democratic Party in New Hampshire, the site of the nation's first presidential primary, Kerry accused Republicans of telling ``lies" about the conditions in Iraq. He once again called for deadline to withdraw a majority of the troops.

``This war in Iraq is a disgrace," the Massachusetts Democrat said. ``Set a deadline for Iraqis to run Iraq and bring our troops home."

On that line, Kerry received one of a dozen standing ovations he received during his 30-minute speech.

The senator clearly hoped his crispness on the issue would offset resentment among some party activists for what they considered a muddled performance on the issue in 2004, when he defended his vote authorizing the war but criticized Bush for moving too quickly to oust Saddam Hussein.

...

For influential progressive Chaz Proulx, Kerry seemed like a different candidate in 2004. In that election, Proulx grabbed a Howard Dean bumper sticker after hearing him just once. This time, he said after the speech, he was inclined to support Kerry.

``I get the feeling that whatever was holding him back last time from been fiery and true is gone," Proulx said.

...

Of course, there is the usual amount of snark for a Boston Globe article, but, altogether, it is pretty good.

1. Another one, in the Washington Post

The normal caution about Kerry's viability in the 08 election, but at least they are not dismissing him and the tone is respectuous.

Definitively a long way since some articles written by the same Dan Balz one year ago, who were totally dismissive of Kerry.

Kerry: White House in 'State of Deception'

By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, October 14, 2006; 3:26 PM

MANCHESTER, N.H., Oct. 14 -- Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) barely said hello to the New Hampshire Democrats who filled a banqueting room here on Friday night before unloading on President Bush.
...

Thirty-two minutes and 14 standing ovations later, the man who lost the 2004 presidential campaign, left little doubt that, if he runs again in 2008, he intends to be the chief prosecutor against the record of the Bush presidency. He is talking about changing course, not changing the tone.

"A lie, a lie, a lie and a lie," he said after recounting Republican claims that Iraq is not in a civil war, that a recent study that estimated Iraqi civilian casualties at more than 600,000 was trumped up, that North Korea is former president Bill Clinton's fault and that Democrats were behind the release of former Republican representative Mark Foley's salacious e-mails to former House pages.

...

Strong rhetoric may earn Kerry applause at party dinners, but will it be enough to persuade Democrats to give him a serious look at becoming their nominee again in 2008? Kerry said those who have encouraged him to run again believe that with a few changes, he can be a viable candidate, even in a field that may include Clinton, Edwards and others.

"Are there enough people who believe that? he asked. "Can we put that together? Have I learned the lessons of getting kicked on my butt and dusted up and can I bring a better experience to the table? I think I've learned a lot of lessons. The question is can you convey that to people? I don't know. Those are the imponderables."

2. Excellent!
Thirty minutes and 12 to 14 ovations! Kerry's speech rocked!

They can call the truth rhetoric all they want. The Democratic field of potential candidates is coming together (minus one), and viable is how all the others, including JK, can be characterized! He's in a better position than most!
