1. That is awful and the explanation is crap
This sounds like a University that is hedging it's bets and doesn't want to offend anyone and possibly risk some funding money.

How disgusting and awful.

This wasn't a scheduled debate between political opponents. It was a get to know the candidate meet-up/rally. This really stinks. This is a Chatholic University, I wonder if there was pressure from elsewhere not to allow this rally to take place?

3. True story.
It's not a public university. They can have anybody they want speaking.

6. Wisteria, you are brilliant
I think that may be the key - didn't that Kerry guy lead the filibuster? and Menendez vote for it?

5. They moved it to West Orange fire station
The venue of John Kerry's appearance in support of Sen. Bob Menendez has been changed to the West Orange Firehouse after Seton Hall University pulled the plug on the event.

"The College Democrats invited Senators John Kerry and Robert Menendez to speak today at Seton Hall University. The topic of their comments was to be the war in Iraq," said Dr. Laura Wankel, the SHU Vice President of Student Affairs. "It is not the practice of Seton Hall University to host politicians in an election season without also hosting their political opponents, lest the University be seen to endorse particular political candidates."

"Given the last-minute nature of this program, the insufficient planning and in view of our practice, this event has been cancelled," Wankel said. "We apologize to the College Democrats and to all members of the Seton Hall community."

From a NJ Politics site - I was googling to find the relationship. if any, between Gov Kean and Seton Hall. He was the Chancelor of Drew University - but I couldn't find a connection to Seton Hall.

I wish I knew - I would have gone The Oranges aren't that far away. I had assumed it was a closed event because there were no details

9. Newark Star Ledger coverage
Using their mutual opposition to the Iraq war as a rallying cry, U.S. Sen. John Kerry came to New Jersey this morning to campaign for his Democratic senate colleague, Robert Menendez.

Menendez, who faces a challenge on Nov. 7 from Republican state Sen. Tom Kean Jr., was among 13 senators to support a measure proposed by Kerry in June that would have pulled most American troops out of Iraq in a year.

Kerry said that although 86 senators voted against his plan in June, he believes support for setting a timetable for a troop withdrawal from Iraq is growing.

"I think there's been a dramatic shift in the U.S. Senate because of that vote," Kerry said. "...New Jersey should be proud of Bob Menendez for casting one of those 13 votes."

Menendez, who voted against the war as a member of the House, has made his opposition to the war a cornerstone of his campaign.

Kean, who said that he would have voted for the war, accuses Menendez and others who want to set a timetable for withdrawing troops as supporters of a "cut and run" strategy.

Menendez, who spoke this morning with Kerry at a news conference at a West Orange firehouse, accused Kean of failing to "acknowledge that the war is a central issue in this campaign."
