U.S. Sen. John Kerry's voice cracked and he paused for a few seconds as he told a crowd of cancer survivors Sunday morning how his father lost his own battle with prostate cancer six years ago.
The Massachusetts Democrat, speaking at the Lance Armstrong Foundation's LiveStrong Summit, told the crowd that he felt helpless after his father was diagnosed in the 1990s and later died after radiation treatments failed.

"I also, even as a United States Senator, confronted all the full range of the confusion and choices," Kerry said. "It's hard and it's tough. That's why you're here today. And there isn't one person here who doesn't understand how you can lift your spirit up and become a bigger human being as a result of this."
The senator was one of three speakers who told their stories on the final day of the summit, which was meant to bring people together from across the country to find ways to improve cancer patients' lives.
Sunday's speakers also included Steve Case, co-founder of America Online, and Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former U.S. senator and vice presidential candidate John Edwards.
