Stepping out for a while
Edited on Wed Nov-01-06 02:28 PM by politicasista
Based on my comments the last 24 hours, it appears that they have hurt more than have helped the cause.

I was commmenting out of frustration to the vitrol directed at Kerry in the blogs and a conversation I had with my dad this morning.

He was basically saying that Harold Ford Jr. knows how to choose his words carefully, and that he and Obama are the new leadership of the Democratic party cause they, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton know how to just say it without a media backlash, something that Kerry and Dean haven't mastered. He told me they say the right things, they just come out off a bit. And the democrats will never be sucessful until they include AA in the campaign.

He also said that the Clintons (Bill is here with Ford) are taking over again cause they were winning and showed how it was done cause they had talented black people in their campaingn, and like any other Democrat is just useless (no one wants to listen to my side:()

If you're wondering, am I making this up, I am not. I am typing as I am talking in another room.

It's never easy being from a red state and this is why I vent. I like Kerry, I am not Anti-Kerry. I have defended him (and Ford) out in GD with hardcore facts just like I was taught here.

I will still vote next Tuesday (yes Democratic) because I would like to see a Democratic controlled Congrees, something that hasn't happened since my freshman year in college.

If my comments offended anyone, I am sorry. I support Kerry 100% (even if my family doesn't).

I'll be back when the dust settles.

Peace!

1. Oh my dear, I don't know what to say
We all need breaks from time to time. Your Dad brings up some interesting points about including AA friends in all Dem campaigns. I am sorry that this is so upsetting for you.

I am a strong advocate of taking some time, so do what you need to do.

We will be here for you, whenever.

3. This has just been a lousy two days, Sista
And, you have every right in the world to say what is on your mind. We need more honesty in this world, not less. Your voice is very important here, and I hope you come back, when you've rested, and just gotten a nice break.

I think the more time goes by, the less bad the whole thing will be. My Mom said hurtful things to me last week (and that was before this incident), and I've just decided I'm not talking to her about it for a while. She wants Obama, too. Okay, that's fine, but I'm going a different path.

4. Jackson & Sharpton?
Your father actually believes Jackson & Sharpton don't hurt the Democratic Party on a regular basis?? That's really surprising to me. White Democrats have to defend them all the time. I'd like you to tell your father that, from me. I'd hope we could get some reciprocity from African Americans when white Democrats are attacked unfairly as well.

I don't think you should leave. I don't think we have enough conversation between the races as it is. You bring a unique view to our group and we miss you when you're not around.

11. Not the point
I wasn't referring to one specific person or other, rather African Americans as a whole.

12. I'm honestly surprised
Because I tend to see Jackson and Sharpton portrayed as the butt of jokes by the media. Mind you, I donated to Sharpton's campaign in 2003 every time he said 'impeachment', but I never thought he was actually reaching any voters. Very interesting differences in perception of what the public thinks.

13. Yes, they are the butt of jokes

but there always right on point. I guess not afraid to go after Bush with the right humor. I remember Jesse's campaign in 88, and Al's in 04 very well. My father actually agrees with JK, it's just that he should choose his words more carefully without "spouting off anything". He calls him an "old democrat." (Sounds silly doesn't it?)

14. It's just odd is all
Because if my father were still alive, he'd be accusing Sharpton & Jackson of "spouting off anything". Still so many differences. Even 'old democrat' - considering new democrats are generally equated to the centrist bunch who have distanced themselves from the Sharpton & Jackson style as well. Oh well.

It's the fresh face, new leadership but bring back winners argument.

16. Everyone loves a hero
knight in shining armor, come to save the day; that's true. I hope there's one out there if that's the way the party decides to go.

17. I like TayTay's suggestion
Let the media darling and flavors of the month battle it out while the real candidates line up real support.

5. Politicasistah
We all feel as you did - I posted many things that were completely in the wrong direction before reading the Taylor Marsh comment. That couldn't be helpful to the Senator. I also saw when people reacted why the explanation that it is true that SOME (NOT ALL) are driven by few options to the military why, though I know it's true it is awful politically AND more importantly, not what the Senator was thinking.

I've seen your posts, they are honest and good. This is a screw up, that it would have been better to avoid. But, as was mentioned Kerry has been nearly letter perfect for the last two years. To be where he was (and possibly is), 2 years after a loss, when the party and media wanted him to go away, is amazing. He can't always be perfect. In a way, the fact that he also had to be the person pushing many things to the edge, is a very tough role and one where misstepping at some point was a major risk.

The question here is whether the party can first give perspective on this - it was a clearly bungled comment - not a major ethics violation, immorality (like condoning torture), or something that hurt anyone other than possibly himself. I suspect from the comments that show anger, not hurt - that he didn't hurt the military.
