They all played politics with this. I watched a few news programs for the first time in almost two years, and it was surreal experience! the talking heads spin things completely out of perspective!
Last night's Hardball and Scarborough:
Chris Matthews was going on and on about how the meaning of Kerry's comment was clear from the beginning and that the American Legion and Repubs played politics with the situation. The American Legion! Matthews was pressing one of his guest to admit he wanted Kerry to apologize for something he didn't say. Matthews was also harping on the fact that Kerry apologized even though he said he wouldn't (another story).
Richard Wolfe of Newsweek is a complete jackass! He was on Scarborough going on and on about how Kerry mishandled this. (Let's see: RW hysteria begins, Kerry immediately responds with a forceful statement, BS continues, then Kerry responds within 24 hrs.) Wolfe (in a WTF? moment) spoke frantically, mixing criticism of the distortion with how Kerry mishandled it. Listening to him repeat that he covered Kerry in 2004 and the impact this will have on 2008, made his intentions clear. His comments about Kerry and also Hillary Clinton (though she did not stand up for Kerry) exposes him as a GOP shill!
Next was a little prick from TNR, who, in bizarre fashion, kept repeating that this incident put the debate about values, not Iraq back in focus. WTF?
The whole incident to borrow the NYT's characterization of Bush, has been completely "creepy!"
The end game was reality: The perfect editorials in the NYT and the Seatle-PI, and Olbermann's outstanding commentary!
