The Tennessean goes to bat for Kerry!
Edited on Thu Nov-02-06 04:43 PM by politicasista
Saw it it the newspaper a while ago. They endorsed him in 2004

Snip:

Truth in Kerry's remark
Hard facts about Iraq from senator are run through GOP spin cycle

The sharks — or are they Swift Boats? — are circling.

Republicans are feverishly seizing on Sen. John Kerry's remark about President Bush's Iraq policies and trying to distort it into a slap against U.S. troops in order to sway voters in next week's elections.

The Massachusetts Democrat apologized for his statement yesterday, but he needn't have, because he said nothing to offend soldiers or veterans. In the speech to a group of California college students on Monday, Kerry said, "Education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

The sad fact is, young men and women without a college degree usually earn less, as much as $23,000 a year less, according to a recent U.S. Census report. And many of those have-nots, lured into the military by enlistment bonuses, find themselves in Iraq. Then, in many cases, their tours of duty have been extended, because the U.S. military is currently overextended with troops needed on numerous fronts.

"Stuck in Iraq" says it pretty well.

1. Excellent news!
Thanks for posting! This is backfiring on the GOP whores - they WAY overreached on this and it's coming back to haunt them.

2. Bush had to do this to

remove Kerry from the campaign trail, so as not to shine a spotlight on the disastrous course he set the country on. Imagine Kerry out there campaigning while Bush is trying to help Republicans. It's also an attempt to undercut Kerry on his opposition to the war.

4. Good
The Republicans are so desperate and in denial that they are going to lose very badly. I really hope this is their 1994. Bastards.

5. You know, he didn't even mean this, yet once again his words are
being spun. Oh well, at least this time, he is getting positive press for it.

13. The joke was absolutely and in no way about the troops.
It was about Bush, who got US stuck in Iraq. So all of this philosophizing about how troops are less advantaged and so forth means they still believe the WH lie that the joke was at the troops' expense. A few of us thought that at first when this whole thing hit. I thought it was some kind of bad throwback to the draft days of Vietnam. Then when we got word it was about Bush, it made so much more sense, and I just thought it should have gone away right at that moment. But, alas, we live in a stupid media world of people who do not do their job.

10. Seen this a few times
Usually it's in the context of 'even if he had meant this', but maybe a few people are thinking about the reality of the troops serving. *sigh*

7. I sure hope the RW is so overkill on this they choke on it -
I made the mistake of turning on RW radio when I was running a long errant today. Newt Gingrich was on with Hannity. Newt referred to "not being surprised" as Kerry hated the millitary in the 70s and has the entire time that he has been in the Senate allways voting against it. He then lumped him with Durbin and gave the RW polemic on that. This is the man that the NYT has praised Hillary for meeing with on some medical technology bill. What a swine - he is not good enough to shine Durbin's or Kerry's shoes.

What I wonder is can Cheney (19% approval rating) and these other charming gents reach anyone other than their base? Even if they think Kerry too Liberal or too anti-war, there has to be a limit on the number of people that can believe this. I wish the Patriot Group could put something out on Kerry's committment - but I assume the Democratic leadership has told him to be quiet, essentially forcing him to allow a second swiftboating. (I just got off the phone with my husband - who doesn't believe me that I will vote green or abstain if Hillary is the candidate.)

12. The salamander one - of course
But what do you expect of a man who asks his wife for a divorce when she is in the hospital recovering from surgery for cancer? A model of compassion and good values.

A cuter Newt with far more ethics and morality;
