Yahoo had a trivia question involving Kerry and this Senator. Apparently, the relastionship goes back to 2001/2002. http://news.yahoo.com/s/cq/20061122/pl_cq_politics/politicaltriviafornov22

2. Actually the 7th is not a Republican area |
|
Contrary to popular opinion, Denver and Boulder are not the only Democratic areas in Colorado. The 7th district, covering the northern and western suburbs of Denver as well as Adams county. It went 50-48 for Kerry in the 2004 election, and Bob Beauprez (the former Republican rep whose campaign for Governor went down in flames this year) only won his election there in 2002 by 121 votes against a Democratic unknown named Mike Feeley. Which was a shame, because Feeley is a good guy. Oh well, Feeley's doing fine in the private sector, which is where "Both Ways Bob" will be heading now.
Yay for the 7th!

3. thanks for straightening me out |
|
that was the one thing I didn't fact-check. That should teach me a lesson! I was working on some memory from pre-election news which must have been about another district. Or maybe I just jumped to conclusions because it was a "pickup" for the Dems.

4. Thanks to both of you for the info. |

I never heard of the man before and since the trivia question mentioned his closness to Kerry before the 04 election, I was wondering if he still was a strong Kerry supporter.

IIRC Perlmutter had a campaign appearance with Kerry shortly after the Democratic primary in which Perlmutter came out ahead of two challengers.

of a Kerry primary visit where he went to endorse him. It was a contested primary and it sounded like Kerry really helped him.
It has scrolled off the current pages - because this group is so high volume!

7. Perlmutter had served in the State Senate for 8 years |

Part of his district (Jefferson County) was also in the CO 7th district - when CO 7 came into being it was often referred to as "Perlmutter's district". Colorado's 7th district is interesting - it was setup after the 2000 census by a panel of judges, and is considered by many pundits to be the most competitive district in the entire country, with equal numbers of Democrat, Republican, and Independent constituents. That a Democrat won there by twelve points is a good sign for the direction the state (and the country!) is headed in.
Perlmutter is a moderate, known for reaching across the aisle during his time in the State Senate. This isn't surprising considering he was the first Democrat to get elected in Jefferson County, which is primarily a Republican area, in 30 years. Kerry campaigning for him went a long way toward securing a primary victory for Perlmutter.
Perlmutter will join the NDC (New Democrat Caucus).
