CHICOPEE - Paul A. Morin, of Chicopee, who was selected national commander of the American Legion this year, said recently a pre-election, nationally publicized comment made by U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., reflected Kerry's "warped view of today's heroes" in the Iraq war.
Morin, in a prepared statement, called on Kerry to apologize for the comment. Kerry initially defended the remark as a failed joke aimed at President Bush, not the military, but subsequently did apologize.

Many critics including Morin viewed the remark as an insult to the troops in Iraq. Morin said Kerry, a combat veteran himself, was suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.
"As a constituent of Sen. Kerry, I am disappointed," Morin said. "As leader of the American Legion, I am outraged.
A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying they are rapists and murderers. It wasn't true then and his warped view of today's heroes isn't true now." http://www.masslive.com/springfield/republican/index.ssf?/base/news-6/1163925885314580.xml&coll=1
