OT: Iraq
The soft-spoken Texas Democrat was an early opponent of the Iraq war and voted against the October 2002 resolution authorizing President Bush to invade that country. That dovish record got prominently cited last week when Speaker designate Nancy Pelosi chose Reyes as the new head of the intelligence panel.

But in an interview with NEWSWEEK on Tuesday, Reyes pointedly distanced himself from many of his Democratic colleagues who have called for fixed timetables for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Coming on the eve of tomorrow’s recommendations from the bipartisan Baker-Hamilton commission, Reyes’s comments were immediately cited by some Iraq war analysts as fresh evidence that the intense debate over U.S. policy may be more fluid than many have expected.

1. I am 100% opposed to more troops.
What is this guy thinking? This is what I'm talking about with Democrats who voted against the IWR. Because they feel no responsibility for the war, it's like they wash their hands of it. Obama seems to have that attitude, and Gore a little bit, too.

Well, the darn report comes out tomorrow.

2. This is crazy. More troops will not resolve the differences. The man
obviously must be reacting to at home pressure to propose this option. Maybe, he is frightened and isn't thinking logically.

3. oh.my.god.
What the hell are ANY of them thinking anymore!!?? I can understand a gradual disengagement while attempting diplomacy to try to create stability - but MORE TROOPS??? Aaaargh. This guy was better than Jane Harmon??

This is the sort of thing Vietnam vets refer to when they cite 'politicians running wars' as one of the problems of Vietnam, (obviously not the only problem). But it seems to me that the military isn't saying they can 'win' this with more troops and that they are saying increased diplomacy is the ONLY way Iraq will ever be stable. We need to listen to the generals, not John McCain who, frankly, spent Vietnam in a POW camp and doesn't really know anything about the war at all. Not a slam on his sacrifice, but I'm not sure whether he appreciates the dynamics as much as somebody who was actually in-country.

What a friggin' mess. And the guy with the plan that I think will work - well I hear tell he's French-lookin' and tells bad jokes or something. :eyes:
