Is it time to take the Kerry for President stickers off our cars?

I just came across this essay, and found it poignant:

The Autumn of Our Kerry Stickers

Steve Stajich, Mirror Contributing Writer

It was one of those conversations that begins at one location and then continues forever as you stand next to your car. The strike, the Super Bowl, the election… I was pretty sure we had covered it all. Then my friend happened to notice that I still had a John Kerry campaign bumper sticker on the back of my station wagon.

He grinned and put a consoling hand on my shoulder. “I think it’s time.”

Of course it was time. Those of us who still have Kerry stickers on our cars know why we left them there: To enunciate that we didn’t vote for Bush. To remind everyone that there was something that made us uneasy about the vote-counting process in the last two elections. To flaunt our alienation from the gang in the White House.

There might have been a period when a Kerry sticker did make an effective statement. But now that statement had changed, or at least softened. Now, rather than positioning me on the edge of anger or protest, my Kerry sticker was dangerously close to pushing me into fuddy-duddy territory. It had become “political” in the same way that a “Don’t Come Knockin’ If the Trailer Is Rockin’ ” sticker was “sexy.” And yet… I could not bring myself to remove it.

When I would begin picking around the edges of my Kerry sticker, peeling off little bits like so many small blue states in the Northeast, it felt like I was somehow throwing in the towel. As the war continued it felt like my Kerry sticker defined my position retroactively, although to many it may only have highlighted that I don’t wash my car that often.

...

I confess that I kept my Kerry sticker on my car because I wanted to say “Still Pissed, Ask Me Now!” But as in the song based on the Biblical verses, to everything there is a season, and we turn, turn, turn. There is a time to gather stones, and a time to peel the fading decals from the last election off your heap and accept that change is coming. And, inevitably, put on new campaign stickers.

That simple act won’t in any way bring an era to a close. The war may feel more like a part of our lives, but it continues to criminally incinerate American lives and resources. How we meet our obligations to those injured in Iraq will be a measure of our human decency for the rest of our lives and theirs. And then there’s the hopefully long-lasting lesson of eight years of Bush/Cheney.

After I removed my Kerry sticker, a person close to me commented that I was finally accepting that we did suffer with Bush for eight years. There was never any secret underground movement made up of those still bearing Kerry campaign stickers on their cars. And yet we knew who we were. We were the ones waiting for the other half of America to come back to a more reasoned and less fearful place. Now, like me, you’re probably eager to see what new stickers appear on the back of their cars.

I suppose Mass. folks have consolation: they can put "Kerry for Senate" on their cars, although even then, it's not the same. Such an act will be more painful for this group, but the Era of the Kerry Stickers is coming to an end, even if everyone here leaves them on for as long as they own their car.

I do confess to removing mine this fall: for painfully pragmatic reasons. I was selling my house, and with my car the first thing people saw in the driveway, it doesn't show the place to be "neutral". I still remember house hunting in 2000, and when I viewed a house with a Bush/Cheney sign in the front yard, everything seemed to be wrong with that house. There was no way I was going to buy it. I did what needed to be done to sell my house quickly.

I have accepted Kerry's loss, or technical "loss", in 2004. That doesn't mean there aren't moments when it still hurts.

1. Now that people are getting Candidate 08 stickers, my Kerry sticker seems like an anachronism
But it's still staying on my car until it goes to the junker. But then again I'm a 20something slacker so I can get away with it :D

2. Mine is still on and it will stay
In fact before NJ's primary, I grabbed the last Obama bumper sticker that was at the house we were phone banking at. When I came home, I went to the garage to put the sticker on - but because my Kerry sticker was in the center of the bumper - and my husband's on one side, i offered him the sticker - because I didn't want mine "unbalanced". I did take a small cardboard Obama sticker and put it in the back window.

I have excepted the loss - and can see the incredible strength and determination that he has shown in being an element in helping the country move forward. I do see that Obama can win and that in someways, it might take an Obama, without baggage from the past, to move the country forward. I'm sure that Kerry will be a strong force in that movement. It will not be exactly as Kerry would have done things - it would diminish Obama to imply that he is identical, but there are many similarities in their goals and even in the way they speak of wanting to find solutions a broad majority could accept.

Seeing Kerry, relaxed and smiling on the various talk shows and Obama events, it is obvious that he is very impressed by where Obama is now and is doing an incredible job as an advocate.

3. Both of mine are still on, and both will stay
In part, because I live in MA , so they (sort of) serve as Kerry for Senate.
In part, because I can't take them off easily, and I have an old car anyway, and also, my stickers are not the standard-issue ones, and I kinda think they're clever, and I kinda hate to wreck them.Because I'm older than WEL so I can't exactly use the slacker excuse, but I guess this is kind of a slacker mindset.
In part, because, well, JK just deserves to have his name out there. I'll add Obama at some point, probably, like karynnj, by putting one in window.

4. I still have my Kerry Dog Tags hanging from my rear view mirror.
I took off my Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker to make room for my Bob Casey Bumper sticker, but I am keeping my John Kerry for President one and my Don't blame me I voted for Kerry bumper stickers until I get rid of the car.

5. I removed my Kerry 08 sticker with sadness some months ago and
replaced it with a sticker of Senator Kerry's famous words from 1971, 'How do you ask...." and also the "Set a Deadline" sticker. This "Deadline" sticker has now been removed to make way for a John Kerry for senate sticker. And, frankly I don't care if he isn't my real state senator, I support him anyway. I doubt I will be putting any presidential stickers on my car this time around. I don't feel inspired enough to honor them in this way. That doesn't mean I won't support our candidate (I really hope it is Obama) this time around, but I just have lost the drive and enthusiasm I had in 2004 for Senator Kerry when he ran for President. The 2004 campaign outcome has left me cynical, sad and battle worn.

6. you captured my mood, wisteria
I strongly support Obama, too, and even canvassed for him, donated, $ , did "visibilities" on street corners, and went to a rally before our primaries, but I don't have the same depth of conviction and commitment as I did in 2004.
I do feel better about the mood of the electorate, though. Finally, they seem ready for change. Wish they'd felt this way in 2004.. we'll pay for decades, perhaps forever, for our fellow citizens' somnolence, ignorance, and fear in 2004.

7. About those "John Kerry for U.S. Senate" bumperstickers...
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 10:00 AM by ralbertson

...such as the one seen in this KerryVision.net post, ahem...

-- they really do look mighty nice on one's bumper, regardless of one's nominal state of residence;

-- they're just the right size for covering up one's "Kerry/Edwards" sticker on the back bumper while leaving one's "Kerry for President" sticker on the front bumper still proudly intact;

-- and they can easily be obtained by anyone from this august group who wants one too, simply by PM'ing me with their snailmail address.

9. I'll keep mine there, as a statement about who I want to be President and who *should* be.
Edited on Sat Feb-16-08 05:29 AM by BlueIris
Relax, I'll be voting Democrat this year, pretty much no matter what. But I can't claim I think the candidates we wound up with are the best choices, nor can I feel good about validating any part of the process through which they were chosen.

10. last night, in the parking lot of a Republican-leaning Boston suburb
(OK, granted that it was the parking lot of Whole Foods. . but still) , I saw a car with a John Kerry for President bumper sticker, in pristine condition. And it was the one from the primaries.

Actually, I see at least one a day around Boston, but this was notable because it was in Republican area, and was still in such excellent shape.

11. Mine is also from the primaries
and until last Thursday was on my car. Due to my accident my car was totaled and I had to go to the wrecker to get my personal items out of the car and then I thought to myself there is no way I'm having my JK sticker go to the dump of cars (lol). So' I said let me see if I can take it off, and sure enough it peeled right off, the only damage was some splitting due to the accident.

Now I need to find me another one. :-)

15. Boy, I am glad you tried to get it off and not have it go to the dump.
Something about a JK sticker ending up at a dump just seems wrong.

14. I did take mine off a month or so ago
I also peeled off one for a local theatre troupe and one for the local public radio station. I just all of a sudden felt like remaining anonymous for a while. Those of you in heavily repub areas will understand.

That might change if Obama wins the nomination, though.

And another marking of the end of an "era"--I cleaned all my Kerry newspaper articles and printouts, extra doorknob flyers and handouts and other memorabilia out of my file cabinet and packed them away in a box in the basement, next to my Kerry rally sign. Packed away but not forgotten.

:loveya:
