ASP email...
...sounds GREAT. I posted this in GD:

What do John Kerry, Richard Armitage and Gary Hart have in common...
...? ASP...the American Security Project. They will "discuss the importance of transforming our national security to meet the challenges of a new international environment in which American leadership must consist of more than military power."

Let's hope the next president is paying attention. This notice arrived today:

American Security Project Event Notice

A New American Arsenal

The American Security Project to Unveil Bipartisan Approach to National Security

WHAT: Official Release of A New American Arsenal

WHERE: National Press Club, Zenger Room, 529 14th Street, NW, Washington, DC

WHEN: Thursday, May 1, 11:00 a.m. EDT
WHO: American Security Project Board Members, including Richard Armitage, Brigadier General Steve Cheney, USMC (Ret.), Kenneth M. Duberstein, Vice Admiral Lee Gunn (USN, Ret.), Senator Gary Hart, Senator John Kerry & General Lester L. Lyles (USAF, Ret.)

On Thursday, May 1, 2008, the American Security Project's Board of Directors will release a keystone document that provides the framework for a bipartisan approach to the nation's most critical national security issues, including terrorism, energy security, climate change and nuclear proliferation.
ASP President and Chair Senator Gary Hart will be joined by former administration officials, political leaders and retired senior military officers who are also ASP board members to discuss the importance of transforming our national security to meet the challenges of a new international environment in which American leadership must consist of more than military power.

The American Security Project created A New American Arsenal to demonstrate that thoughtful bipartisan cooperation on national security is possible, even during an election year. The group plans to take its message to the American public to spur rational and constructive dialogue about the future of American security and our role in the world.

For additional information, or to R.S.V.P. for this event, please contact Holly Gell at (202) 347-4267 or hgell@americansecurityproject.org .

2. Oops, sorry, Yvonne!
I get the ASP emails and I'd seen this so I didn't click 'til now! I think this is VERY important (and it's on my birthday!) I so wish I could be there or somehow see it! Maybe there will be something available on their website. I don't dare dream that CSPAN will show it...

In any case, it is very comforting in the midst of the uniformly tragically unwise decision-making coming from this administration to know that this group of wise, informed, experienced people is thinking about what can be done in the future (the near future, we hope, though not near enough!)

3. Happy 'almost' Birthday...
...Luftmensch067. :) Thank you for posting...I think this is SO important, and it publicly lays the groundwork for the future Democratic President on the vision going forward. For me, as well, that has been immensely comforting. Just knowing we have leaders stepping up to the plate to make the country 'right', after 7+ years of this administration, gives me hope for a new positive direction. (Yes, I'm a hope-monger. :) )

I hope you will be able to be there. It's a little too far for me. :7 I also think there is hope for C-Span, if some of us call to request it. They HAVE been really good about covering events of importance...at a time when almost nobody else does.

4. We should all and request it then!
Because I most assuredly won't be able to be in D.C. on Thursday, alas!!! I guess we could call the ASP folks, too, and ask them if it's being recorded - tell them there's interest, even if they just put it up on their site!

Thanks for the birthday wish, fellow hopemonger! :-)
