Election 2008: Massachusetts Senate

Massachusetts Senate: Kerry Ahead of GOPs by Double-Digits
Friday, April 25, 2008

Four years ago, John Kerry was running for President of the United States, a race he narrowly lost. Now, the 2004 Democratic nominee is seeking re-election to the United States Senate and he should win handily.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Massachusetts found Senator John Kerry enjoying double-digit leads over two potential Republican opponents. Kerry leads Jeff Beaty 55% to 30% and Jim Ogonowski 53% to 31%.

The former presidential candidate has wide leads among women, but doesn’t fare as well among men. Kerry is ahead of Ogonowski by just six points and Beatty by thirteen points among men,

Kerry dominates among Democratic voters but the two Republicans are fairly competitive among unaffiliated voters.

Not surprisingly, Kerry is the best known of all three candidates in the Bay State. He is viewed favorably by 54% and unfavorably by 32%. For Ogonowski, those numbers are 38% favorably, 35% unfavorable, and 28% are not sure. Beatty’s ratings are 27% favorable, 31% unfavorable, and 42% are not sure.

The Democrats are also fairing well in the presidential election in Massachusetts. Both potential candidates lead John McCain by double-digits.

On edit: For the record, this demonstrates the unwillingness of MA men to forgive. It's interesting that his lead among women is wide, in spite of his Obama endorsement.

1. Why surprised?
Look at the gender composition of this group :-)! Seriously now, I do see your point.

I wasn't worried, but—still nice to see.

3. Agreed.
It's always comforting to see good news like this. I think these numbers will also get better and better as time goes on. We haven't really started focusing on state races yet because so much of the attention is on the Presidential primary right now.

4. I'm stunned that the Republican negatives are already so high
Both have a high percent of "not sure" - I think they made a mistake on Kerry's - if you look at the more detailed table - I think they forgot to "carry" the one.

5. Sparks Fly In GOP Race For Kerry’s Senate Seat
For now, Beatty and Ogonowski are busy attacking each other. As far as I am concerned, they can continue that game until September.

6. Kerry should win by 20+ points, but this is good to see.

It's good to get confirmation, even if the election is around 7 months away.

7. It's an odd time right now
So much of the oxygen is being eaten up by the national Democratic primary. Yet, the fundamental arguments for a Democrat in Senate races, not just in MA but across the nation, are boiling away. The economy, jobs, the foreclosure-housing problem, the War in Iraq and other issues that favor the Democrats are just boiling away in the background.

All these issues will come up in Massachusetts later on this year. They are there now, waiting like a trap for the Republicans.
