The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 6/2/08
"The Inland Lighthouse"

Into the night,
out from him,
out into the air
he throws his frames
and fixes them,
holds them out there.

These are his shores.
The waters never
rush at him, never
follow the beams
back along the watch
to his lean shiver.

Around him, as he
turns, he hears
a dull tick of grains.
He stares into the day.
Sand fills the sky
with its falling

and he turns and turns.
"Nowhere. Nowhere."
It is his oath.
He is the light,
the keeper.
He is not to leave.

—James McMichael
