The other smackdown today: MASSHOLE!!!!
It's in reaction to this vile article by Howie Carr about Ed O'Reilly.

Check out Masshole's witty response:

A lot of people on this site and 22% of the delegates at the Convention wanted Ed O'Reilly on the ballot. And the vast majority of those people were more concerned with getting someone, anyone on the ballot than actually considering just who that person was. I tried to warn you that Ed O'Reilly was running nothing more than a vanity campaign, that his progressive or even Democratic credentials were virtually nonexistent, that he was just pandering to progressives with all his talk about marriage equality and protecting the Constitution. Hell, even posters who I battled with on this site about Ed have come out and basically called the guy a fraud.

So where does Ed find himself today? As Howie Carr's new darling. Yup, Ed O'Reilly: A True Howie Carr-Approved Massachusetts Democrat. Congrats! Now that Howie is backing Ed's vanity campaign, Democrats will get the fun of watching Republicans from around the country funnel money into Ed's bank account! Yippee! Let's send a message to John Kerry because nothing says Massachusetts Democrat like getting funded by right wing Republicans.

Just off the top of my head, Ed has backed the Swiftboat lies. He's stolen the Karl Rove "windsurf" language. He paid Mitt Romney's old signature collecting firm to be his "grassroot support." And now he's been endorsed by Howie Carr. Oh, and just "like animals before a tsunami," Ed has the power to sense recessions before they hit.

2. So open-minded, your brains fall out
Sorry Mass peeps, it's just what pops into my mind when I think about trashing an outstanding public servant like John Kerry.

3. O, the rats are out. There is no question about that.

Joannie has her own editorial which, without going as far as that, slaps Kerry (and actually touches a nerve).

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/06/12/kerrys_oreilly_factor/

However, what bothers me is the inability of the Kerry team to get its own articles showing how Kerry cares about the state: real people who will not be called loyalists, ... . Come on. All these articles were written without any positive words from people who are not Kerry's staffers, and frankly, Kerry's campaign manager comes out as out of touch in most of these articles.

"I ran Senator Clinton's campaign in Massachusetts," said Roger Lau, who is now Kerry's reelection campaign manager. "I know how much intensity and passion motivated her enormous base of supporters. It's no secret that the passion didn't dissipate . . . Plenty of delegates who have been our friends a long time said openly that Senator Kerry had to answer for his endorsement, and they felt liberated to send a message because Kerry was going to win renomination so handily."

Lau said that O'Reilly wouldn't have made the ballot "were it not for John Kerry's early endorsement" of Obama.
...

Uh, why is he even addressing this -- other than for touting his own horn as Clinton's campaign manager -- and ignoring the important part, the fact that Kerry cares about Massachusetts and has been spending the last four years doing something for the state.

4. That is off key -
I initially missed that he was Kerry's re-election manager - and thought that it showed how vindictive the Clinton people are. I assume that Kerry picked him to build bridges to the Clinton people, but it looks like he couldn't (or didn't) do that well at it. Though Vennoci may have chosen what to quote, there is a problem when he speaks of the passion of Clinton supporters with no comparable language for Kerry.

It also shows two things:
- Even though HRC is suppose to be in the reconciliation mode, it is clear that she did not pass a message to her supporters that Kerry had every right to endorse as he chose - and she had fought for that endorsement herself - and he was a strong voice for the party - and would be needed in the Fall. This is another very selfish Clinton move.

- That Kerry, who is extremely likely to win - though he could lose to the combination of Clinton people, lefty freepers and RW crossovers - he is not viewed like the Clintons are - as likely to hold a grudge. This would leave MA with the choice of a LW creep and a RW one. It certainly appears as though he did not twist arms.

Kerry’s qualified

I’d like to comment on your editorial concerning Sen. John Kerry’s ability to represent Massachusetts during Sen. Ted Kennedy’s illness (“Mending fences in Mass.,” June 10).

I’m confident Kerry will continue his contributions and fully represent us. Kerry has been a champ for Boston, attracting millions of dollars and jobs to Massachusetts and serving on influential committees, including chair of the Small Business Committee.

Recently Kerry secured federal funding to extend intelligence analysts’ positions in the Boston Regional Intelligence Center. This unit is essential to regional homeland security.

This is only one of many examples of the vital work that Kerry does every day. I am grateful for his efforts, strong leadership and effective voice.

6. He seems intent to find his votes among the Republicans. Here is another Republican talkhead he has
visited yesterday. May be simply because the GOP are the only people who care about him?

7. The author of that nonsense is indeed clearly a professional Republican opportunist
From the article's sidebar:

Holly Robichaud, The Lone Republican in the Herald's Monday Morning Briefing, is a successful GOP political strategist who is known for speaking her mind. Holly is not having a good day unless she is making a big government liberal miserable.

She served on the Massachusetts Republican State Committee for 20 years. Presently she is a campaign instructor for the National Federation of Republican Women, GOPAC, and Winning Campaigns, co-founder of the watchdog website -- Massachusetts Republicans for Truth, and consults for numerous conservative national organizations and candidates across the country. Her clients include Americans for Limited Government, Parents In Charge Foundation, U.S. Term Limits and the Pennsylvania Speaker of the House Dennis O'Brien to name a few.

8. I responded to one of the idiots
repeating the lie that Kerry has done nothing.

My response:
You clearly have not been reading even the Boston Herald regularly if you think that Kerry has done nothing the last 7 years.

As you might remember - because the Herald was not happy with it, Kerry authored Kerry/Feingold, which is similar to the current official Democratic view of how to exit Iraq. In addition, the first state of the Senate resolution calling for a regional conference on Iraq, was a Kerry amendment that passed by voice vote in fall 2006.

Kerry’s amendment that creates an affordable housing trust fund recently passed the Banking committee 19-2 and will likely become law.

On global warming, Kerry was the entire Congressional delegation to Bali and The President’s chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality, James Connaughton, said at a SFRC meeting:
“I would particularly also want to call out thanks to Senator Kerry for coming to Bali. I would note that the remarks he gave in Bali were very constructive in helping to educate the international community on the needs, what it would take for America to move forward together in a bi-partisan way. I thought those remarks were very well received. Senator Kerry, thank you for that.”

Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat, a member of the official US delegation, went further, saying:
“The fact that we had a treaty was significantly due to the fact that Senator Kerry was there. He was a virtual part of our negotiating team, without his day and night support and lobbying of the EU. we would not have gotten a treaty.”

On healthcare, Senator Kerry’s well regarded idea of re-insurance for catastrophic costs is part of Obama’s healthcare plan.

On terrorism, it was Senator Kerry’s international money laundering provisions finally enacted that are some of the strongest tools in stopping terrorists’ money flows.

On government corruption, Kerry’s “Cunningham amendment”, which takes away pensions of legislators who take brides or are guilty of other types of corruption passed.

All these were in the last 7 years, and represent only a part of Senator Kerry’s accomplishments. How many Senators are there who have acomplishments dealing with all the major concerns people have - Senator Kerry has.

But then, I hear that O’Reilly enabled many drunk drivers to get back on the road - now, that’s something Kerry never did.
