Things I didn't know about in detail :)....
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 11:08 PM by politicasista
1. African-American turnout across the country was record breaking in 2004. (hat tip to karynnj :)) I never the AA pundits (i.e. Jeff Johnson from BET, Tavis Smiley, Tom Joyner or Joe Madison just to name a few), urban magazines (i.e. JET, etc.) or AA leaders mention that. They spent more time dissecting Kerry and the "loss" and spinning the AA vote as votes against Bush. Go figure.

Although Obama is projected to get 90% or above of the AA vote, there is still a word of caution from Roland Martin of CNN. I agree that in the end it all comes down to turnout. (I also noticed that the AA press didn't cover Kerry's endorsement of Obama like others. I think I know why but will keep it to myself)

2. Kerry was involved with the Freedom Riders. This is a nice 04 excerpt from Essence magazine (if anyone hasn't seen it already. :)) and this nice article. I wonder why the campaign didn't make it more of an issue (or did they?). I know Kerry isn't one for bragging on himself (this is a good thing), but I think it would have opened some eyes to the research challenged or internet illiterate that complained that he just didn't "get it".

There's more, but I just thought of commenting on them if no one minds me posting (or reposting) this info.

1. Interesting that Essence gave Kerry such a hard time about his 1992
affirmative action speech, when Obama touched on many of the same themes in his historic speech on race. Just another example of Kerry being ahead of his time. I also am annoyed the way the BG biography depicted it; it was a courageous speech at the time, he paid for it in a bit of a backlash, but in retrospect, it's good he gave it.

3. Yep. I remember hearing that in an interview
and TayTay dug up the interview and posted about that whole experience. I never saw the BG biography. And yep, Kerry was ahead of his time. Oddly enough, the questions asked about Kerry are being asked about Obama (there was a lot of that during the primaries). It was bad enough that Obama, like Kerry had to feed their egos. Good grief.

2. thanks, sista
Both the statistics, and the Nantucket story were nice.
BTW, Kerry was great with the kids at West Harwich. He seems to really, truly enjoy them.

5. Story from the July 4th parade in Plymouth
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 03:39 PM by TayTay
Lots of different people made sure their kids saw the Senator. This was a "one day you'll tell your kids you met John Kerry" thing, btw. This one mother literally put her baby into the Senator's arms expecting hugs and kisses and general baby admiration. The good Senator laughed and said something to the effect of, "Okay, bye, I'm taking this baby with me," and proceeded to walk down the street with the child. Lots of laughter from the parents and, interestingly enough, no complaints from the kids when this happened.

I'm taking this baby. Bye!
