If you're a Democrat or unenrolled, there's an election next week to determine the party's candidates for U.S. Senate and Governor's Council.
This may come as a surprise to many, since with no gubernatorial contest and most legislators going unchallenged, most of the attention has focused on the presidential race, which won't be decided until Nov. 4.

Kerry, now nearing the end of his fourth term, has always served in the shadow of the state's senior U.S. senator, Edward Kennedy. But his record over the past 24 years and leadership on issues ranging from the environment to veterans affairs, has won him national recognition that very nearly catapulted him into the presidency in 2004. He remains one of the most visible and respected members of the Senate.
O'Reilly has campaigned tirelessly over the past year and should be commended for giving Democratic voters a choice; but he has failed to make the case for replacing Kerry as the party's nominee.
