How were 'Unity Dinners' handled in the past on DU?
Okay, virtual Unity Dinners? They occur after a grueling primary fight or election as a means of reconciling the factions. There was one last February in NH after the primary. (This is where Clinton tested out his wonderful "Send Me" speech lauding Kerry's actions over the years. Best endorsement speech I heard all year.) Some are held in the morning and people get together and discuss their differences over ham and eggs. The best ones are held at night, preferably in a place with a decent bar and go on until the participants get weepy and start telling each other, "I love you like a brother man. I didn't mean it when I said you sucked and your candidate was a douchebag. And I had no idea C-Span was filming, I swear to Gawd."

Does DU do Unity Dinners? If not, how can we start one, cuz I think we need one. Some people are just getting too pissy and pretty soon it's going to get irreconcilable. (Or not. Some Democrats have a sort of political PMS. I guess you just have to wait for it to pass.) The real enemy is the idiot in the WH and his evil minions in the Congress. How did people here refocus after the primaries? Seito? Little Clarkie? SandnSea?

1. it wont work
the case you bring up with Clinton at the unity dinner involved high profile democrats who have lived and worked for years with each other and would most likely continue to do so. and they are used to the primary stuff. they are mostly loyal democrats anyways whose loyalty lies with the party no matter what.

DU is different in that it's an online forum with a lot of anonymous people. people are free to come and go as they want. if the moderators had not put in place certain rules which did not allow for certain types of attacks on the candidate the place would probably have been like it is now during the campaign. even with the rules put in place there were still a lot of bitter people who would show up and complain.

and i wont forget the many threads starting by people who threatended to vote third party if the candidate didn't do this or that.

also remember that DU has always been pretty negative when it comes to Kerry. Edwards who also did well in the primary didn't have much support on DU. although there wasn't negativity towards him as there is against Kerry.

2. Unity Threads, rotflmao
Oh my god, we had ten a day during the primaries. I should post one and say "for old times sake". Most times people would pledge ABB. I remember once I told the Deanie's to go fuck themselves, I was really pissed at Howard Dean at the time, don't remember why now. Of course I would have gotten behind him because the Supreme Court was always the most important issue to me, which I posted numerous times. And then, as now, the Deanie's were always the victims anyway. In fairness, we had a couple of truly brutal Kerry supporters, I'm sure the Deanie's might put me in that category as well. The difference is, I rarely started flame threads, unlike these other two I'm thinking of.

It's the war vote mostly, I think. I just think that vote was so completely opposite of what people expected from John Kerry, some just decided it was political and find it all the more disgusting because he betrayed his own values, in their minds. Then there are those who didn't even pay attention in 2002 and base their opinions on the latest political speech. And call themselves informed. :eyes:

I don't see any hope for any sort of real unity at DU. It is difficult when you've got Democrats as different as McDermott, Liebermann and Lincoln. Howard Dean said alot of the things people wanted to hear, I just never believed he meant any of it. Too much of an election year conversion for my taste. I preferred a guy who had the right vision all along, but was willing to make the necessary concessions to at least make progress. I still think it's pretty damned impressive that JK was able to make peace with a country we were at war with, through diplomatic means alone. It may not be a perfect situation, but it's a damned site better than creating another N Korea, which is where we were headed.

Ack, what could have been. I can't think about it too much, just makes me cry.
