Data Congress Seeks on Bolton Includes Company Names

By DOUGLAS JEHL
Published: June 1, 2005

WASHINGTON, May 31 - The information that the White House has refused to provide to Congress for its review into the nomination of John R. Bolton includes the names of American companies mentioned in intelligence reports on commerce with China and other countries covered by export restrictions, according to government officials who have been briefed on the matter.

Bush Hints He Will Withhold Further Data About Bolton. It had been reported that the White House was refusing only to hand over the names of 19 individual Americans mentioned in 10 intelligence reports by the National Security Agency.

The names of the individuals and companies, which remain highly classified, were provided to Mr. Bolton by the National Security Agency in response to requests he made as under secretary of state for arms control. The Democrats who forced the postponement last week of a vote on Mr. Bolton's nomination as ambassador to the United Nations argued that the Senate should insist on access to the same information.

But the White House has said Congress has "all the information it needs" to make a decision on the nomination, and at his news conference on Tuesday, President Bush dismissed the request for more information as "just another stall tactic by his opponents in Congress."

So, * won't release the docs because it might show that Halliburton profited by selling banned material to China? If it was still possible to be outraged by these criminals, I would be.

What might be in these "other" papers that the Dems haven't already requested?

Bush Hints He Will Withhold Other Papers on Bolton

By RICHARD W. STEVENSON
WASHINGTON, May 31 - President Bush criticized Senate Democrats on Tuesday for "stalling" a vote on John R. Bolton's nomination as ambassador to the United Nations, and indicated that he would not grant them access to intelligence documents they have demanded to see before allowing the confirmation to go ahead.

Mr. Bush's statements, at a news conference in the Rose Garden, suggested that he was intent on winning the battle over Mr. Bolton on his own terms when the Senate reconvenes next week, rather than negotiating a deal with Democrats and some Republicans who have been advocating a compromise.

Democrats delayed a vote on the nomination on Thursday night, saying they wanted access to classified information about Mr. Bolton's conduct that the administration has refused for weeks to provide.

"Now in terms of the requests for the documents, I view that as just another stall tactic," Mr. Bush said, "another way to delay, another way not to allow Bolton to get an up or down vote."

No wonder they want to stonewall the SFRC and make sure this stuff never gets out. It's interesting that the leak is coming from the WH, very interesting indeed, since the Rethugs were charging that it's the Senate Comm that leaks like a sieve. Somebody inside the WH dropped this dime. Hmmmmmmm!

4. Iran-Contra redux, perhaps?
Remember Poppy Bush's "memory lapses" about Iran-Contra? Maybe we could have a similar situation brewing for BushCo? Hmm, I see a major case of amnesia coming soon for * and Darth Cheney.

5. Not yet, but this is yet another pebble
that could precede the avalanche. This is, after all, treason. (Selling banned substances to 'enemies of the country' is treason, right?)

Thank gawd that the Dems are 'filibustering' (shhhhh) Bolton because they can now debate all this stuff at will. I just pray that some WH hack gets a lift from all the 'Deep Throat' nostalgia out there and decides to become an anonymous source. That would be nice.

Senate Dems have to close ranks around this and not yield an inch. This is a big, big story.

with his enigmatic "drop by my office" remark...

8. I think you may be right
I just hope we get this info to the proper Senators. It is super secret stuff, more so since it might make the Emperor and Darth Cheney look bad, so they need to be careful.
