Call Congress

Dear Friend,

The Bush White House and the Republican Congress are living in their own world. But, they're messing up ours.

The Washington Republicans ignore facts, push aside America's real problems, promote partisan sniping and division, and flat out refuse to turn their attention to finding ways we can work together to make America stronger.

We may not be able to change their minds -- or their hearts. But, we have to change their behavior.

It's time to demand action -- time to embarrass Washington Republicans out of their partisan frenzy and into acting on the problems America's families need solved.

That's just what's happening today as, with help from the johnkerry.com community, Keeping America's Promise's powerful new Kids First ad hits the airwaves.

In the days and weeks ahead, we will continue taking action to mobilize Americans who are frustrated and fed up with what they are seeing -- and more importantly what they are not seeing -- from the Republican Congress and the White House.

There's no better place to start than with pressing for action on the Kids First Act of 2005. You can help in two ways. First of all, help Keeping America's Promise extend the reach of its vitally important ad campaign.

Then take a second step. This week, our Kids First task is to build more momentum by urging every member of Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, to co-sponsor the Kids First Act of 2005. Click on our map and locate your representatives. Tell them how strongly you feel about covering every child and putting Kids First.

The number of Americans struggling without health insurance is going up. The number who can count on their pensions for economic security is going down. And the empty promises from the Bush Republicans are piling up.

Fortunately, common sense Americans all across the nation are refusing to accept Republican foot-dragging any longer.

As you read this email, ads are going up across the country in the hometowns of elected officials from Texas to Maine -- putting pressure on Republican Congressional leaders like Tom Delay and Bill Frist to start doing something for the good of our kids and our country.

With your help, we'll keep turning up the volume on them. We'll keep letting them know that we won't stand by while Washington ignores the problems facing families every day.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. Sometimes I think Republican leaders in Congress forget why they're here. Let's make sure they know it's not about them and efforts to tighten their grip on power. It's about the American people and efforts to use the power of our government to improve people's lives.

1. Well I called my Republican Congressperson
His staff person took the information but asked me to explain what the legislation was - which doesn't sound good. I didn't call my wonderful Senators (Corzine and Lautenberg) as they were listed as sponsors long ago.

2. You're wonderful
Ahm, I got nobody to call. Sigh! (Meehan would support this.)

Is there anyone in the Senate or House who actually changes their mind due to phone calls?

I used to be the one who thought my husband was crazy when he called or emailed Frelingheisen on every vote - then we'd get his form let explaining his vote - in the opposite direction. Frelingheisen used to be a pretty moderate Republican, but I doubt if he would step out of line. Other than on the stem cell vote he hasn't) The only hope is the following.

His district is interesting in that it's mostly suburban old money main street Republicans with a few Democratic cities. Last year though, Kerry did significantly better than Gore did (although Bush won). The analysis was that the RW agenda is beginning to alienate some of the socially liberal Republicans. As the Republicans went to the Terri Schiavo right after the election, he may need to be independent of the house leadership.

In terms of whether they change their minds, I doubt it. For example, even if someone fraudulently sent Kerry letters signed by every resident in MA asking him to confirm Bolton, I don't think he would devote more than one brain cell to rejecting the idea. But this is different in that it's asking them to look at new legislation and suggesting there's a need for it. I would think though that any Republican would be punished for signing on to Kerry's bill. My Representative is not very vulnerable - his family has been in NJ politics since the revolution and his family (a great aunt, I think)decades ago donated a mansion and beautiful grounds as the county's arboretum. The Republicans couldn't beat him in a primary if they tried.

4. I agree, it won't change a firmly made up mind, but
it might pull some of the fence sitters one way or the other, and it might give someone the courage to actually vote their convictions, if they happen to contradict the way their peers are voting.

People like JK or Boxer or Feingold don't need any extra courage, do they? :)
