1. Oh, no, you wouldn't want to do that.
Bob Casey, the Democrat who will be running against Santorum, is a self-described pro lifer. This means that we cannot support him, as having a pro-life Democrat (who is great all the other issues, as I understand) is tantamount to having Santorum in there anyway.

We, the denizens of DU, must not support Casey, but instead complain about him, and then complain even louder if he doesn't win due to lack of support.

Duh!

2. Ah, screw that
I learned a long, long time ago tht getting 90% of a loaf is better than 0% of a loaf. (Well, at least it is for those of us who like to eat.)

I am pro-choice and adamantly so. But, I think that there is a difference between a Casey and a Santorum even on this issue. One might actually work to bring about education, healthcare and so forth that might actually drive down the abortion numbers.

4. Ok, but don't say I didn't warn ya.
Your extremist, non-conformist views might not win you any friends if you post them in other forums.

:hi:

8. I agree Tay Tay
I know it's a cliche, but I really think we need to be the "big tent party" with room for different views on issues like abortion. Sure I'd love for my candidate to agree with me 100% of the time on all issues, but that's very rarely going to happen. Harry Reid is not pro-choice, but I still think all things considered he's doing pretty damn good job as minority leader!

6. Bull, I'll take a pro-life Dem over Santorum any day of the week.

edit to add - keeping Republicans in control of the Senate is more likely to hurt abortion rights then a Dem controlled Senate even with Harry Reid as Majority Leader.

edit to add - Ha RockyMountain - I reacted too quickly and didn't notice your sarcasm.

3. How does he explain similar cases of abuse
throughout the country. Doesn't Arizona have some high profile cases too?

Didn't Law, who enabled priests to move to other parishes, openly state that his state had 2 Catholic Senators who who were wrong on abortion? So if Boston's liberalness didn't prevent him from criticizing 2 perfectly good Senators, how can it be blamed for him not protecting the diocese's young boys?

5. I can help with that!
Bob Casey for Senate 2006:

http://ga4.org/senate2006/homepage.html

(I live in SE PA)

btw, Casey is "pro-life" but much more moderate than Santorum in legislating it, as far as I can tell. For example, he is pro-contraception and for other ways of preventing unwanted pregnancies. Given that PA is, as Carville once described it, "Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, with Alabama in the middle" that might be the best we can hope to win with.

7. In further Santorum news,
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 05:54 PM by whometense
thanks to the Carpetbagger:

Rick Santorum's re-election campaign suffered another setback late last week when the Pennsylvania House voted 175 to 24 to restrict eligibility for education payments to families who don't live in the state. Santorum, who homeschools his six children, has received public funds for his kids to attend online charter schools, which became legally problematic when local officials realized the Santorums live in Virginia. The House measure, which supporters admit was inspired by the Santorum controversy, now goes to the state Senate.

Pity.
