What did you all do today? I went to the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. It's a vintage auto race and car show, really big and really awesome (I'm huge into cars.). Went with a repub friend, who is a lot of fun. We don't get into politics except to tease each other about our political leanings. After the show, I made her shop with me for something to wear to a meetup with Howard Dean that I'm going to on Tuesday. I invited her, she said no. No big, I have Dem friends, too. Anyway, I don't know what I would have done if she's have said yes. Anyway, the point of the post is that I think there is still a chance for all of us to come together, but I don't know how long that will last. I think when this admin is done, we'll all play a little nicer. It wasn't like this during the Clinton admin, at least not for me. I'm still OK with my repub friends, but there is still some tension. What do you all think about your repub friends and acquaintances? How do you talk with them? Despite the divisiveness, are we all still OK, and are we going to make it till '08? I have my fingers crossed.

1. My best friend is a right of center Republican and a Southern Baptist |

I'm a left of center Democrat and a non-practicing Unitarian. Kind of strange, but it works. One thing that I think has helped us remain good friends is that she lives about 2 1/2 hours away, and even though we e-mail each other daily, we only see each other a couple of times a year. Also, we do have a lot of other things in common besides politics and religion.
When we do see each other (or e-mail each other) we never really talk politics. Not directly at least. Sometimes she'll say something about the high cost of insurance (she and her husband are self-employed) and I'll make some snarky comment like "yeah, somebody should do something about that, shouldn't they." Okay, that's terribly immature of me I know. Also, she treats FOX "News" like the gossip, and that drives me crazy.
For almost three months after the election, it was very difficult for me to communicate with her at all. I was terribly depressed for one thing - I don't know if she knew why or not, but since my depression began on Nov. 3 I thought maybe she could figure it out.
I guess we became close friends at all because 20 years ago, my political leaning were different. (When I was young and dumb, I was young and dumb.) I changed - she didn't'. Sometimes I really want to have a serious political conversation with her because it's so important to me, but I don't think it would turn out well. She's not changing her mind, and neither am I.
I also have a lot of Republican, fundie relatives. Having a sense of humor helps to ease the pain.
