Things like a pornographic parrot pic turn up when someone hotlinks to someone else's page, the hotlinked person notices the bandwidth theft, and replaces the pictures with something awful. But it's hard to imagine that a few people looking at pictures of Kerry got anyone that worked up. Hmm. Anyway, if it did happen, the solution is to always post the pictures on your own site instead of hotlinking.

35. Copying pictures versus hotlinking -- the low-down

If you get your own space on Photobucket and put the pictures there and use that URL, or load them onto your own webpage, and put up that URL, then everything is fine -- unless of course it was one of those situations where the person had a DO NOT COPY ON PAIN OF DEATH notice on their website and they ask you not to duplicate their page content, but anyway it's not hotlinking.

Hotlinking is when you copy the URL to the photo on someone *else's* page, and not just in such a way that it provides a link for people to click on, so that you're telling people "Go see this site to find pictures of Kerry" -- that's still not hotlinking. Hotlinking is when you give that person's URL as the source for an image that will display whenever someone opens up *your* page. Like if you're showing us pictures to display right here in the middle of these messages, but when you fill out the <*img src...*> thing, you glue in that other person's URL, so that a picture on their page will pop up on this message board. *That's* hotlinking.

Hotlinking is Very Bad because it is bandwidth theft. Instead of sending visitors to their webpage, you're using their webpage to provide content for your own page. The problem comes if they're paying X dollars per month for X gigabytes of data transfer. Then everytime someone hits Refresh on this thread, the pictures reload and that gets counted against their monthly data transfer quota. Sometimes people hotlink in a very small and unharmful way, if they're on a little board that almost no one will look at and they're linking to something that has massive data transfer capacity. But often it's the other way -- some poor schmoe gets billed for a zillion gigabytes of data transfer, and yet no one was coming to their site, they were looking at all the stuff as part of someone else's site.

Hotlinking is like plugging in big, energy-sucking utilities into your neighbor's powerlines without their permission. One way people fight it is by replacing the hotlinked images with a message like "This page runs on stolen bandwidth" or just with something shocking. Again, it's hard to imagine that someone was hosting Kerry pics and noticed a handful of remote calls for their content and got so upset they put up pornographic parrots, but I suppose it *could* happen. It's the only way I've ever known for someone to try to share pictures and get something awful, at any rate.

Telling people where to find someone else's site, or recommending they see it, etc., is fine -- it's not hotlinking. It's just loading in the URLs for the pics on their site so that they automatically display as pictures on your site -- that's what gets people testy. I wonder how long they'll keep the pornographic parrots up at that site? :) Maybe until they notice it's not hotlinked anymore.

hotlink by mistake -- it's easy to do; all this stuff with HTML is so confusing, it's a wonder we don't all commit more faux pas all the time. And the parrot wasn't *that* bad -- startling, but not traumatic. I've seen people get hit with much, much worse. :)
