JK Tour de France Picture Thread
There should be plenty more tomorrow when Lance wins Le Tour.
Vive le Lance!!!

BTW, I may use my pitiful French throughout. Excusez-moi, s'il vous plait.

Love John, love Lance, love to cycle! What more do I need? It's funny to see JK look kinda star stuck in those photos just like we would be if we met him! These are so cool!

On edit: John & Lance have a lot in common including the fact that they're both cancer survivors, they both ride and they both speak French. I know Lance is from Texas, but I have a feeling he voted for someone other than the Village Idiot if you know what I mean!

but I'll look for something that relates better to the pictures.

Kerry chums it up with Discovery crew
Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) was hanging out at the Discovery Channel bus before the start of the 20th stage of the Tour de France. Dressed in a button-down sports shirt, chinos and penny-loafers, the cyclist and former presidential candidate looked on as Lance Armstrong warmed up for the race on his stationary bike.

With hundreds of fans looking on, and scores of photographers snapping pictures of the scene, Kerry chatted with George Hincapie, Chris Carmichael and Sheryl Crow.

"I wished him well and congratulated him on an extraordinary accomplishment, which, you know, he's got to finish off," said Kerry, about 20 minutes before Armstrong started the day's time trial. "I gave him what encouragement I could."

That's kinda cool. He does get around doesn't he? I really like that.

EDIT: It's probably a nice conversation starter in the Dem cloakroom as well. "So, what did you do this weekend? Well, I went home and attended a few meetings, went to a dull party, the usual. And you?" "Tour de France, rode in the Follow Car, you know, the usual."

31. Did anyone catch the breif intervie with Sen. Kerry on OLN?
It was at the very end of the show. They showed a brief talk where Kerry joked that he had taped the OLN coverage of the race last year when he was on the campaign trail and would watch snippets whenever he got the change. He said he would fast-forward through the tapes and run the race without commercials. (He then made a smiley, sorry face, about skipping the commercials.) Kerry further stated that he got to the point where he could do imitations of the exuberant, hand-wailing announcer. That was a hoot and half.

(Who said Kerry's wooden and stuffy. They should see this stuff. He looked so happy to be there.)

So, where did your Senator spend the weekend GV? (Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. I am evil.)

I thought it was great that the announcer was so excited about JK's comments. Something like, "yeah, that's my man John Kerry" or something similar. Anyway, his reaction was priceless.

My senator? He's in his home chapel with a map of Massachusetts and some darts.

Santorum (The Perfect Catholic) is on The Daily Show tomorrow. I plan to use my evil Massachusetts liberal vibes on him to make him stutter the entire time. ("Your mother sews socks in hell, baby.")

It amuses me no end to read the local coverage of Kerry in France. The Lowell Sun just picked up the AP story that noted Kerry's presence.

"Also looking on, smiling his inscrutably beneficient smile, was the junior Senator from Massachusetts and long-time Tour de France fan, John Kerry."

I haven't a freakin clue what 'inscrutably beneficient smile' means, but it kinda warms the nether regions of my, ah, soul. (Yes, soul.) It sounds, ahm, French to me.

when you said to Tay Tay "if you hit him from the east and I get him from the west, we can sandwich ..." then I read the rest of your sentence and realized you weren't talking about JK at all but about M-O-D.

66. Inscrutably beneficient?
Edited on Mon Jul-25-05 07:12 PM by TayTay
I don't know, I still can't figure out what the hell that means. I wonder if he used that when he was talking to the fishermen in Gloucester? Maybe at that Elderly center in Pittsfield. I just put it down as something that only comes out in France or among writers who want to write fuzzy-headed prose that doesn't really mean anything. (On the other hand, maybe the fishermen liked it. He did get the red tide funding, or tried to. Smiling inscrutably and beneficiently might have given them pause. "Ahm, Sentah, what the hell are ya tryin ta tell us? And why are ya smiling like that? Are ya feelin awright? Ya need ta sit down or somptin? Here, have a clam.)

As for Santorum, consider the bad mojo sent. We will get the whole core of Salem pagans right on it. (About 10,000 residents in and around Salem are pagan, of various beliefs. Surely that constitutes something. And is a friggin riot at election time, let me tell ya. Sen. Kerry represents a very large (realtively speaking) constituency of witches.) No wonder Santorum hates us.

"Comprendre" is the infinitive. With "je" it's "comprends". But French conjugation is horrible. I live in France since almost 20 years and still mix this stuff up. My daughter laughs at me all the time.

BTW, Kerry's French pronunciation is great. He hasn't an American accent.

Thanks, I'm fine. We are back in France since three weeks and Julie is already on the road again, off to see her boyfriend who spends some time with his grand-parents in the north of France.

BTW, you were right to delay your trip to France until next spring. It's very hot here right now - over 100°F! - and there are to many tourists. You have to queue everywhere, at the post office, the bank, the gas-station and even the bakery.

Have a nice trip to Massachusetts, and if you meet the senator, give him a kiss from Julie and me. ;-)

They moved it to the archives because it was on the Saturday page. Scroll down until you see Kerry's picture.

59. thanks!
I did see it. I've got to forward it to my French-translator daughter, who will be thrilled. Maybe she can give me an exact interpretation. If so I'll post.

62. It's so funny
The French reporter starts asking JK in French, saying something like "Your mother is French, you speak French", and JK answers immediately "Just a bit" and that he doesn't feel confident etc. Then the reporter asks him something in his really bad English and JK answers in French. LOL From this moment on the journalist asks all his questions in French and Kerry answers in English mixed with some French in it, until the last question which he answers completely in French.

It reminds me so much my daughter and her English and American friends who all speak both languages. They start a sentence in English, then switch to French in mid-sentence and finish in English again. And when you ask them about that they didn't even realize. It's amazing. I guess your daughter can tell you about that too.

43. Just got a phone call from my son,
who happens to be in Paris right now.

He caught part of the Tour, but he said it was just like watching the Boston Marathon - a lot of jerseys in a blur from a distance. ;-) And hard to see - people stake out positions way ahead to get a good view.

TOUR DE FRANCE
Notebook: Official visit; keeping faith in Jan

Official visit

Sen. John Kerry arrived at the Tour de France on Friday night, on hand for the race he's wanted to see again since he was a kid living in France in the 1950s.

However, last year's Democratic presidential nominee wanted to keep a low profile and brought no entourage for his weekend visit. He drank beer in the parking lot with Tour workers Friday night.

Then on Saturday, the cycling fan rode in the red Tour car with event director Jean Marie Leblanc. Kerry also was invited onto the Discovery Channel team bus to visit with Lance Armstrong before the stage.

The two met a year ago, and talked via mobile phone during last year's Tour. Armstrong and girlfriend Sheryl Crow also were in Boston last November to watch the election results at Kerry headquarters.

Like Armstrong, Kerry is a cancer survivor and has been wearing a LiveStrong bracelet since they came out last summer. A woman in Iowa gave Kerry the bracelet, and he has yet to take it off.

It was at the final election event that Armstrong invited Kerry to be his guest at this year's Tour.

Meantime, when the Tour ends in Paris today, many more celebrities are expected to be watching on the Champs Elysées. The guest list includes Will Farrell and Ron Howard, who is in Paris directing a movie. Tom Hanks also may be on hand. His wife, Rita Wilson, visited with Armstrong earlier in the Tour.

The Agence France Press also was reporting that Prince Albert of Monaco, who is a frequent Tour visitor, will be on hand for Armstrong's seventh championship. The AFP also reported that actors Michael Keaton and Lindsay Lohan are expected.

Damn, I love that. It's so prole. So Dem. That's just awesome. And I love the fact the he just went as a fan without a big entourrage. That is such a sweet story.

I didn't know Kerry had cancer until I read about it here in this forum once on another thread. Nice you have someone as a friend who has went through the same thing as you. My grandfather died recently of lung cancer and he liked Kerry. I thought it was cool how Kerry was just there as a person and not using his status to be treated like a male diva or something. You know? That's so neat about the bracelet too!!

72. Kerry knows how to get the ladies
They're looking up at him with sparkles. ;) You never see a woman looking at Bush that way except that really weird picture of the girl with the glasses who has her hands folded like she's praying and has sparkled eyes.
