Kerry's brother mulls a run
He weighs campaign for secretary of state

By Frank Phillips, Globe Staff | July 27, 2005

Cameron F. Kerry, the younger brother and a close political adviser to US Senator John F. Kerry, said yesterday he is laying the groundwork to run for the 2006 Democratic nomination for secretary of state.

Kerry, a Boston lawyer who has operated in his sibling's shadow for more than three decades, said he met with Secretary of State William F. Galvin yesterday to inform him of his decision to run for the office, but assured him it was dependent on Galvin's vacating the post to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Galvin, who is serving his third term, has said he is seriously considering the gubernatorial race. He is expected to make a decision by early fall. He declined to comment on his meeting with Kerry.

In an interview with the Globe, Kerry said he is establishing an official political account to collect donations and has assembled several of his brother's top presidential campaign fund-raisers in New England to help him raise a campaign war chest. He said he plans to begin traveling around the state to meet Democratic activists and other potential supporters.

The Secretary of State is responsible for over-seeing elections and has the right to inspect the systems in place. Hmmmmmmmm.

I like Cam Kerry. If he runs, I will support him. I'm not sure that Galvin is going to vacate the office, as his speech at the Ma Dem Convention was a dud, but he might. It would be nice to have a SecOfState that would actually be interested in deeply looking at how elections and election machines run in the Commonwealth.

1. I'd vote for him
More Kerrys in office - What's not to like? :)

I wonder if Cam's involvement in the post-election fraud investigations is what prompted him to consider this?

2. I wonder that myself
Plus, I think Cam is a good guy in his own right and deserves to step out of the shadow of his older brother and try his own luck at holding elected office. Gawd knows the guy has enough experience in politics, both local and national, to contemplate a run on his own.

I am not sure that Galvin is going to run for Gov. We shall see.

5. I was impressed by how similar Kerry's siblings and daughters
were when they talked about duty, country and values. Cam seemed to be a very smart, nice guy. It would be cool to hear/see his older brother support his bid for office.

7. It would be interesting to see where money is being spent
from some of the Dem accounts. I haven't had time to do a look-see at various reports filed with the FEC (and won't until mid-August) but it woudl be very interesting to see who is spending money in OH and on what. Very, very interesting.

hmmmmmmm, indeed. (Somebody else read some tea leaves while I'm gone. This is one direction.)

6. This is GREAT news.
I really love everything I've ever read about Cameron Kerry. I live way out West, so I can't really help with the effort, but I wish him and his supporters the best of luck.
