A Failure to Communicate
I don't know if this has been posted, but I was going through my junk mail, and saw this in B&C.

A Failure To Communicate
Hurricane Katrina raises concerns over transition to digital

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 9/12/2005

A massive breakdown in communications after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast—nearly four years after the devastating mishaps following 9/11—has brought the issue of emergency communications into the spotlight on Capitol Hill.

“I am closely following the communications failures in Katrina-hit areas,” says Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.). “As Congress soon tackles the DTV transition, we must be mindful of these challenges and ensure public safety, emergency response and interoperability remain our paramount focus.”

Washington has started to assess the system failures exposed by the government’s delayed response to Katrina. The ability of police and firefighters to better communicate during emergencies has been one of the major motivations for the DTV transition because some of the spectrum to be reclaimed from broadcasters—almost certainly now sometime in 2009—is to go toward wireless services for first responders.

The issue is sure to come up at DTV-transition hearings in the House and Senate Commerce Committees this month. Kerry says as much, and both committee chairs have expressed concerns about getting spectrum for emergency services.

2. Are you SURE there's just one of him?
Maybe that's the reason for the "Damn, Kerry looks great today!" comments I keep hearing. Fess up, Tay Tay. MA has cloned it's Jr Senator, and there are actualy two of him. But instead of an evil twin, there's "good Kerry" and "gooder Kerry".
Damn, you NE libs are sneaky.
The least you could do is share one of him with the less fortunate (hello!) states who have so little.
Damn, sneaky Massholes. Must be that 'science' thing you have going on up there.
However you did it, please promise not to share your secret with PA until after Mr Casey is sworn in.

3. Damn, you caught us!
Twice as nice! And no cloning tech for PA until Santorum (whose name means a place where you put insane people so they can get some rest, right?) is gone. We cannot chance that our superior cloning tech will fall into the hands of the evil Rethugs. That would be horrible.

And I am working on a third copy of Sen. Kerry with the folks from MIT. Bwahahahahahaha! (Personal copy. Just cuz.)

4. Ha! You are incorrect, my technologically superior friend.
Santorum, as our good friend Mr Kerrey with an 'e' reminds us, is Latin for Asshole.

Please, for your own good, try to stop at three Kerrys. You are not a large state, and that much hot Dem in such a small geographic area might have unintended consequences. In fact, I'm afraid I must insist that you start to export after the third.

I'll take two.

:P

5. In the famous words of Ronald Regan,
"There you go again" !!! (I think he was already starting to lose it then) I guess my idea of cloning him wasn't as origional as I thought it was?!! But as far as I know, I thought of it first, so the first one is mine !!!!;) DC

6. Ha!
DC, you dare to compare your Kerry-needs to those of the sad and powerless Commonwealth of Pennsylvania! You, who have elected the most pitiful of all Dems! Think again, my friend. You hold no claim to the next JK-like senator.
We have needs, damnit! Shame on you for even thinking you are worthy!
Tay Tay, ship him c/o globalvillage, general delivery, Pittsburgh, PA. I'll take care of the rest.

8. Girls, Girls, Girls, there is enough to go around.
And you make me feel unhumble. I'm beginning to think that my Junior Senator is much more admired that I ever thought possible. (Prophets without honor in their own countries and all that.) I will bribe my geek friends at MIT with comics, Anime and Xena DVDs, some homebrew and the promise of an interesting cloning problem to solve and we shall attempt to meet all your needs.

Ahm, perhaps we should also give some thought to seeding programs in other states, wherein we isolate the genes responsible for creating good Dems and share them with our Dem-deprived neighbors. That is also worth looking into, I think.

Ahm, about that hotness factor in MA. We can walk and chew, ahm, gum at the same time. There can never be enough hot Dems. Especially when you get a good look at what else is available in the old Commonwealth of Massacusetts. (Yeesh, you know we have to put things away for a rainy day. You never know when a crisis could come up and we are forced to go to our bench. I mean I love and respect Barney Frank, but somehow he just doesn't register on the 'want him, need him, have to have him' scale. Lifestyle preferences aside, that is.)

So, Two for PA (To replace Specter and Assho..., er Santorum. And how many for CT, cuz I like one of the CT's sens, and one is tolerable.) Anyone else?

9. I'm so ashamed.
To argue with my new good friend DC over the first export.
Please forgive me, DC. I'm certain Tay Tay will provide for all.

Tay Tay, you did see the shipping instructions in the previous post, didn't you?

(psssttt. me first. shhhhhh...)

10. Done! PA has obvious, ahm, needs. so you go first
Now, clones can be produced at any age. So, what age bracket do you want shipped. Young enough to become PAish or in present form? ('71 Kerry or '05 Kerry. One adapts, one if pretty much a finished product.)

11. It's funny you ask that.
I am a Johnny Depp fan. People who know that most often talk about the young Johnny Depp, but not much interest there for me. Most of his early movies were good, but nothing like 40+ year old Depp.
Aarghhhh... Capt'n Jack, now there's a pirate I could plunder.

I'll take the most recent version of Kerry, thank you very much.

Shipping instructions in previous post.

You might have to wait a bit though. There is this Anime festival coming up and I can't tear the geeks away from it. So, expect shipment by Halloween.

13. Didn't this thread have something to do
with DTV and emergency communications? How did we get to cloning and Johnny Depp?
It's late. SNL is doing a skit about the senate right now. Kerry and Boxer at Condi hearing. Pretty funny. Especially Boxer.
What were we talking about again?

14. OK
PA. Gets the present version, and I'll take the 70's version. That was pre-Teresa!!! HA! HA! So I'll have a better shot at him!!. He likes older more experienced women with a lot of class! I'm a "classy broad" and every one says I look ten yrs. younger than I am. Only thing is.........can you clone someone "back to a younger age?" Well if you can do it for him, you can do it for me!!! so there!! I'd have a face lift, a tummy tuck, a butt lift, and implants, but who can afford that? But I'll still take the younger version. Look at all the good years he'd have left in him? I see it as a "win win" situation!! Love ya! DC

15. Oh you vixen, you have cornered me into a confession
I am completely fascinated by the earlier period in Kerry's life. I wonder what he was like after Yale, but before the VVAW years. I really do. On the one hand, he had led a pretty sheltered life and all the dilemmas had had to face were fairly mild compared to whatever happened to him in the war. He attended schools that were all-male and had minimal exposure to people from outside a certain social set. Yet, this is a guy who is completely comfortable with different groups of people, is wonderful with women (no, politically and in social interaction) and has an inner core. (Has to, wouldn't have survived without it.)

Ahm, I find it difficult to think about this because the other part of my brain kicks in and calls me a bitch for wondering what a truly awful period of time must have been like. (Don't fuck with other people's actual lives. It's indecent and callous. I am harsh sometimes when I talk to myself.) So, I always come up to a point of actually thinking about this and then shutdown. I can't seem to reconcile the two wishes, one to speculate on what that was like and how one person transformed, obviously, into another and my desire to not look at someone else's implied suffering as some sort of scientific experiment. (Harsh on myself again.) So, whatever insight ability I have gets packed away. Err on the side of being decent.

So, I would take the '68 Kerry. He must have been fascinating. (Forget I said that. Oh dear. See what I mean. Don't want to see cuz it was real, but damn that's an interesting story.)

16. Shame on you Tay Tay!
Must be a terrible thing to be human and have feelings we can't ignore! Too late, and too deep for me. I'm running out of steam after my dog "took me for a walk"!! I'm wondering about his earlier years too. I've read a few bits and pieces when he was campaigning, but that's not sufficient for me. He is one thing I KNOW, he's very intense and introspective. Very deep and sometimes "brooding" I would love to know this part of his Psyche. Hasn't he or someone close to him written a book about his early life? See if yo can find out, and I'll order it from the Library if it's not in stock.. Good night all, talk to ya after the Sun talk shows!

I just wrote a beautiful long post about 1971 Kerry - and then my computer froze and it got lost into the ether.

Maybe it's just as well. Too much smoldering seriousness for this thread.

Did you get to see Unfinished Symphony? That movie said it all to me, and had young John in the context of his VVAW buddies. It was so moving. And had a few fantastically catnip moments - esp. a shot of an exhausted John sitting at a table at the police station with his head on his arms. :loveya: :loveya:

I hadn't even heard of it! So I googled. For anyone else whose JK education is as incomplete as mine:

Now if only I could get my hands on a copy!

19. Someone on this board -
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 08:04 AM by whometense
I forget who it was - alerted that they were showing it on the Sundance Channel, so I taped it. Maybe if enough people emailed the Sundance Channel they'd show it again.

11. How do I contact Sundance Channel?
There are many ways: Telephone: 212/708-1201 Email: feedback@sundancechannel.com Mail: Sundance Channel Customer Service 1633 Broadway New York, NY 10019

The filmmakers are located right near where I live, and I emailed them about whether it was available on DVD. They wrote back and said they could send me a copy for $45 - so it's clearly not in general release. That's pretty steep!

But in case anyone's interested, here's their contact info:

Thanks for your inquiry into our movie, Unfinished Symphony . To purchase a VHS or DVD copy, please send a check for $45 made out to Northern Light Productions to the address below. Once we receive it, we will send you a copy.

With the check, please be sure to include the address to which to send the movie and specify the format.

Thank you again for your interest in our movie.

Sincerely,

Clay Salit

20. Oh well. No Sundance channel on my cable.
Scads of sports channels and fake-religious snake-oil channels though. See what I have to deal with? And this county went strong for Kerry, too.

Thanks for the info to purchase it though. $45 does seem steep.

21. It still would be worth
emailing them and asking them to release it as a DVD. They put out all kinds of indie pictures on DVD - they might do it if they had enough requests.
