Just got back from the Democratic Comedy Night
That was fun. Lots of jokes about people who left Boston, got confused and came back. Wonderful time. We talked MA politics a lot and how much we all wish Romney would leave.

That guy is toast.

It was a diverse group. (There was even a Republican there. Who knew they let Repubs into Malden now? I was impressed.) We talked about races coming up, how we can't kill each other just because killing other Dems is fun, doesn't mean you should do it, cuz we have to unify to get rid of Mitt the Shit. Damn it. And we talked about, hypothetically, if there was a Senate seat that should open up in, oh, say, '08, who'd win the primary? (I think that might happen. People were taking sides already, even though it's only a theoretical situation.)

And miles and miles and miles of good jokes. Typical 'What group do you belong to' jokes about the Italians, the Irish and so forth. Boston politics is so tribal. I also forgot that the farther away you get from Boston, the less funny it is. I miss that.

1. Malden, huh?
The last time I came to the Boston area, that's where I stayed.

I could go for a Democratic comedy night here in the D.C. area (not that there isn't a lot of humor, intentional and unintentional, in this place). Even Barney Frank, definitely one of the funniest members of Congress, had to be imported from Massachusetts. We're such an earnest bunch around here, but we do have ATTITUDE.

2. I love going to these things.
My husband got introduced to the crowd: "Another of our great Democrats, up there holding down the fort in the Lowell area!" Everyone gets introduced as, "Another of our great Democrats." There were at least 12 intros before the comedians came on, then at least 8 more after the show. It was great. (We also played 'political geography,' with the directions. "Do you know where this restaurant is hon?" "Yeah, yeah, I was there once in '96 when we had that Dem breakfast and Kerry came. I went with Sue, cuz she was chairing for Kerry in town that year. I remember it." Sigh, knowing your way around town by what places have hosted 'Unity breakfast." LOL!

The comedy just reminds me of how tribal Boston still is. And how, all these years later, we are still telling 'us against them' jokes. Hey, KG: Lots of Newburyport jokes last night. (versus Malden. Ahm, Newburyport got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on that one. LOL!)
