Kerry Continues Fight for Heating Help for Families this Winter
Kerry Continues Fight for Heating Help for Families this Winter
October 20th, 2005

The Senate is set to vote on the LIHEAP Amendment again today as a part of the transportation spending bill. Democratic Governors have called on Senators to Vote Yes on the LIHEAP amendment.

The Senate is expected to vote today on an amendment to provide heating assistance for low-income families and seniors this winter. The amendment was first offered by Senator John Kerry two weeks ago and, while garnering 50 votes in the Senate, was blocked by a last-minute procedural maneuver. The bipartisan amendment was re-introduced in the Senate this week.

The amendment will provide immediate funding to help low-income families and seniors heat their homes. It would fund the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at the amount Congress authorized and Bush signed into law, $5.1 billion. President Bush’s budget only includes $2 billion in LIHEAP funding - more than $3 billion less than is needed to meet basic needs this winter, without even factoring in for record-high energy prices.
