Big life-changing decision to make here..... |
|
Edited on Thu Oct-27-05 06:10 PM by blm
some of you already know that mr. blm works in a newsroom.....and in the last 6 yrs of our marriage we have gone from Patriot-News in Pa, to two different KnightRidder papers, and now living in Charlotte, NC.
Well.....the KnightRidder NATIONAL DESK wants him in DC.
I won't get too specific, but he'll be involved with the finished product stories of some of DU's favorite and most trusted REAL investigative reporters. I mean the REALLY BIG guys.
My patriot and political self are gnashing at the bit to contribute to REAL NEWS that makes a difference to this nation.
The problem is that I worry about the cost of living and my little girl's educational opportunities. She just turned 5 and is at an excellent school here.
Our wonderful and modest 200,000.00 uptown home would cost well over a million there in DC.
My concern is affordability, as I'm no longer in my past cushy job circumstances from LA and NY and would probably be forbidden to even volunteer in Kerry's office.
anyone live in the area who can fill me in?

1. Congratulations to Mr BLM!!! |
|
No matter what you decide, the offer has to be so exciting. Maybe you couldn't volunteer directly in politics, but there are alot of other activist opportunities in DC that you could get involved in. And think tanks and other places where you might could go to work, if that's what you want to do. I don't know anything about living in DC, obviously, but I did want to offer congratulations and I know you will come up with the best decision for you and your family.

2. thanks....bottom line will always be what's best for our daughter. |
|
My husband is an extremely unselfish man who is not career-driven......I'd say more quality-of-work driven, if anything.

3. I know someone that is selling a home there - 680K! |
|
But he has something like 10 acres. Outside of DC.
I hope you go. This sounds like an amamzing opportunity. You can always start with a condo, until you figure out where you want to live. I know that it is hard to move kids. But if you do, it's good to do it before she starts 1st grade. I'm assuming she is in kindergarten.

This is a great opportunity and your daughter hasn't started school yet. I'm sure there are a lot of great schools there. I remember when I was in the middle of fourth grade my dad got a job offer with TVA and took it and we had to move across town and my brother and I had to change schools. It was really tough but I adapted pretty quickly and love where I live. I've been to DC a long time ago (when I was in seventh grade) and it's a great place. And I'm sure a lot of opportunities to get involved in politics and intern and stuff. :) I'm sure you guys will make the best decision for your family.

DC is way more expensive, but it's also exciting. The schools in the area are good and there are a lot of educational opportunities and cultural events in the city.
It is a big decision. But it also sounds like a great opportunity to really do some great work on a national basis.
Eiterh way, best of luck for you and your family.

It is a friend of my husband, who is going thru a divorce. I'll tell my hubby to call him, and let you know what I hear. How soon are you moving? That might be helpful to know, as I don't know if the divorce is final yet.
on edit - just spoke to my hubby, he will call his friend and let him know that you want to find out about the house. I'll keep you posted.

Finding a place to live will help determine that. Maybe a spring or summer move?
Can you tell me where the house is located?
And THANKYOU so much for the heads up, pirhana.

a chance of a lifetime. :-) Mr. BLM won't be able to volunteer, but, I think you might be able to. Or what SandnSea said above. Plus, there's always the internet(s).
I've moved around with Mr. KJ (while he grabbed his own brass rings) for over 20 years... and although every move in the end cost us real money, the experiences each time have made up for it.
As for living there, my brother has lived in Columbia, MD for about 30 years. His daughter just bought a townhouse in Ellicott City, a few miles away.
Let us know what happens. A new vista unfolding is always exciting.

9. A friend of mine lives in Damascus, which is less expensive |
|
and is at the end of the subway route. It was small townish, but within commuter distance of DC and very nice too.
I liked it. But then again, I live in a small town and commute to a city.
