What do you all think about a get-together?
Reading through the cool posts on the get-to-know-each-other thread (Thanks for that ForeverFree) the idea occured to me that it might be fun to have a gathering of DU Kerrycrats. My thought was maybe over the summer, since a lot of us are students.

Since we are from all over the country, my first idea was somewhere central, but then I thought what would be more appropriate than the home state of our hero? I'm not sure if our group is big enough to call it a rally, but something on that order.

Just thought I'd throw it out there, and see what people think...

1. That would be super!
And I've been dying to take an East Coast roadtrip all year. However, as I live in Illinois, that might be somewhat feasible, but I'm not sure our West Coast Kerrycrats would be too keen on driving 2500 miles.

9. Nah, it's okay
I am really hoping that having the Red Sox win one against the dreaded Yankees will quell some of the more idiotic 'Yankees Yuck' moments. (Really. Honestly.) I want us to not suck and not have an inferiority complex and not concentrate on the dour all the time. I want it to be a contest of equals. That would be amazing. And a rivalry on a whole new level. Still intense, but with one side not destined to lose. So exiting!

You will be okay, There are actually a lot of Yankee fans around here, cuz we got colleges that attract them. I know for a fact that there are Sox fans in NYC and they seem to be alowed to live. It'll be okay.

12. My older son lives in NYC,
and he's the biggest sox fan anywhere.

NYC is full of expat Bostonians and they own certain bars on game nights. It's a lot of fun when the sox are winning - not so much fun when they're losing to the yanks. ;-)

13. I've lived in NY all my life
and I have never been to NYC. Pathetic, isn't it? I've seen the Yanks play in Toronto, that's a helluva lot closer to me than the Big Apple. One of my life to-do's is to see a game at Yankee Stadium. I can honestly say that I don't think will never like Pedro, but I've softened to the Sox in general because of JK. I really hoped the WS was a good omen for him. When I thought up this little rendezvous I didn't think to add PLEASE let's not make it a Yanks/Sox weekend.

74. Not a problem
All Sox/Yanks games are SOLD OUT. In fact, it is very difficult to get tickets at all. I want to go to Toronto to see a game because it costs $2 to get in on Tuesdays and parking if $5 and you can get a hot dog, a bag of chips and a some tonic for $3. (In Canadian, which used to mean something.)

I love New Yorkers. My daughter doth live among them. My uncle was a New Yorker (upstate, near the Falls.) New York State is very beautiful and I want to see The Hall of Fame again. It's just that I don't care for a certain pinstripped-bedecked group of professional baseball players who inhabit some choice real estate in the Bronx. And Pedro is a punk. And a psycho. I loved him once, but now that we have divorced, I see his flaws ever so more clearly. He even had a falling out with the Little Person who used to hang out in the dugout. (You know, Pedro's Mini-Me.) That is not a good sign.

Fenway is nice. It's just expensive and filled with nuts.

29. the last time I flew was 1988
and I vowed I'd never do it again. I was in a panic attack from take-off to touchdown and got sequestered behind the cockpit with the flight attendants coats because my hysteria was frightening the other passengers. I guess it's hard to stay calm when there's a girl turning blue from 5 hours of hyperventilation sitting next to you. :scared:

It's probably better you don't fly. These days they'd probably lock you up for being a suspected terrorist.

I was afraid I'd broken my husband's hand during takeoff. And now he wants me to go to Rome next fall. He's been married to me long enough to know he needs to start working on me at least 6 months ahead of time to give me time to mentally adjust to the prospect of flying.

95. That happened to me...just like that:... ALSO in 1988!!
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 11:42 AM by Karenca
I was crazy...really CRAZED!! on the flight..I annoyed the man sitting in the seat next to me for the entire flight. I dont know why I reacted like that, I was already a pretty well-seasoned traveler.
Anyway, I SWORE I would NEVER fly again!!..And for 16 years, I didn't!
Well, this year, I took a plane (ALL BY MYSELF!) from New York to Paris. From Paris, I got on a small plane and flew to Florence....After 15 days abroad, I got on another small plane, flew to Rome, and then took a large jet home to New York, all by myself! (with 103 fever, no less.)

I just did it...made the reservations, went to the airport, got on the plane, and tried not to look out the window. It was really OK. The small planes, well, I wasn't feeling that safe on those, but the jumbo jets were really fine.
I couldn't believe that after 16 years of fear, I did this, and I am happy I did, because it afforded me an opportunity to see Italy, which, in my wildest dreams, I could not have ever imagined that the beauty of this country truly existed.
Beside, it felt really good to confront my BIGGEST fear.

I took a shower afterwards, but I've been there. It was (grit teeth, forcing words out) very nice. (It really was. Honestly.)

Fenway is going to come as a shock. It's very tiny compared to most other major leagues ballparks. And it costs a friggin' fortune to attend a game. (Serious sticker shock.) The cheap seats are up to 15-20 bucks a pop. But it's nice.

You might be slightly teased about last fall, but we are still so buzzed from The Rapture that you would be fine. We like all teams and are nice to everyone except a certain group that shall remain nameless. (And they can come too. After all, The Rapture freed us from so much, we are now all filled with sweetness and light and it should last until at least the end of April.)

I'm not sure if I can make it - it'll depend on the dates, I'll be doing more traveling with my mom this summer -- but if I can I would LOVE to!

Haven't been to Boston in a long time. But I used to date a guy from Marblehead and went up there a couple times: love love love the historic sites and the water! (OK, lit geek, I was very excited to go to Salem and see the House of Seven Gables and the Customs House where Melville worked and all around some of the places H.P. Lovecraft based places on...)

I'm also planning an Oct. trip to DC. It was my turn to pick a destination for me and a camping buddy. Every other year we try to go somewhere big instead of the usual Wisconsin camping trips we do every year. With my new interest in politics, I wanted DC. I wonder if I can get anywhere near the big K. Piddy pat.

Marblehead is nice, my husband's cousin lives there. Beautiful ocean views. I love Salem. It used to be pretty dull when I was a kid but then the new witches came and the place changed. Some for the better, some not so good. Everybody goes to Pagan Alley on Essex Street in Salem, but do not go to the Peabody Essex Museum, just the fake history stuff. And Salem is interesting and historical. (You should see this place when there is fog, it is ahm, unique: http://www.hawthorneinsalem.org/images/image.php?name=MMD899.)

I went to the First Church of Christ, Spirtualist in Salem once with my sister. (Here is the link: http://www.members.tripod.com/salem_spiritualist/.) It is an old Church where they talk to dead people. They had hymnals and stuff and a liturgy and then they brought out a visiting Rev from CT who told us there were dead people in the church who wanted to communicate. I got kinda pissed off because no dead people wanted to talk to either me or my sister (who made me go in the first place.) It is a real ego-deflater when not even the dead want to speak with you. Then we got Chinese.

I have a Necronomicon cookbook! I know someone who goes to Providence, RI every other year for the Lovecraft convention. He said they have a defrocked Baptist preacher who conducts the Cthulhu prayer service. The preacher was classically trained and has a beautiful deep booming voice and conducts the choir as well. I'm supposed to go next time.

Btw, New England is not weird. We are tolerant of weird. There is a difference.

What does everyone think of DC as a possibility? I've never been, and had been thinking about making our next annual adventure a trip to DC. It would have the added advantage of scheduling a thank-you visit to Kerry in the Senate. ;)

Just a thought.

We might have to tie WEL up and put a gag in her mouth to keep her under control though! ;) (And now I've gone to a completely WRONG place...must go wash brain.)

39. Doesn't Matter To Me
If it is D.C. or if it is Boston all I care about is being there when Kerry is and trying to get him to join us. I don't care where at. Although he is in D.C. more than in Boston so if we went ther we might get a better chance of him joining us. All I care about is John! I want KERRY KERRY KERRY KERRY KERRY KERRY!!!!!

43. Have A Get Together With
John Kerry and the Kerrycrats! Thats the #1 thing I want. What we do after that I'm all for. I just want all of us Kerrycrats to be able to say that we had our own personal meeting with John Kerry! Now that would be totally awesome!

Because you had said "Kerry" about 20 times in that last post. But I definitely mirror your enthusiasm for this idea. I'm not sure how realistic/possible it will be to meet him, but I'm sure he'd love to meet a group of people who love and respect him. He's so sweet and sincere, he'd probably want to show us his appreciation.

I know how he could show me

But seriously, even if John for whatever reason can't be in the equation, it would rock to meet and see all you guys in Real Life. Especially out east - I love going out there, so much. I've never been to Mass. and would like to, but DC is a blast too (and actually a fair bit closer for me.)

I do hope we can work out the details of this for this summer, because it's a great idea.

about an hour from DC, so that is more convenient. I would also love to visit Boston. Either place would be fine.

47. Oh I know
I'm all for it either way. But I do think if we go at the right times when John will be there we will get him to meet with us even if it is only for 5 or 10 mins. Because if we put that much effort into it I will be willing to bet he will do it. We just have to make up our minds where. Some say Boston then I heard D.c. all I'm saying is it don't matter we need to figure out where and get planning. Although D.C. you would probably have a better chance at seeing Kerry I'm not sure. But he is there more than Boston. And it is not as far for some to travel. But like I said it don't matter to me.

Let him know the deal, and see when the best time would be for him to meet us. Obviously, he's busy, but again, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to meet people who love and appreciate him so much. We'd make him feel better. :)

76. I will try.
I can have my husband call in some favors, though the WELCOME thread had a person check in with more pull than I have.

I would, in all seriousness, contact the Friends of John Kerry PAC and tell them our intent. After all, we are friends of John Kerry and we would like to meet with him. He's not that hard of a guy to get to, it's not like he's the Pope or something. If we get 12 people or more, you can get the deluxe Welcome to Boston, 'we heard about you through the DNC Convention and we would like to be pampered' treatment that they promised us would happen if we were nice to visitors last summer and didn't run anyone over. Might work.

I can also give you the exclusive guide to how to talk like a Bostonian. Otherwise, you won't understand a word I'm saying. It usually comes out like this:

Sentah Kehree lives in Bawstan on Beekon Hill. He has a big frickin' house up theyah somewhayah. He nevah pahks his cah anywheyah neyah Hahvud Squayah, cuz it would get towed. (Senator Kerry lives in Boston on Beacon Hill. He has a large residence up there somewhere. He never parks his car anywhere near Harvard Square as it would be towed away rather quickly.)

Trust me, you need this. And for some reason, people usually want lobsters. Can't stand them myself, I think of them as sea cockroaches but visitors do seem to like the creatures. Let me know, I will arrange to get some. Just found out one of my nephews has a friend whose Dad is a lobsterman. Fresh smelly things.

Preferably DC if we're gonna do it soon because I still live at home, I am not in college yet but next fall, I start attending community college and I might learn how to drive. I would much prefer DC btw.

65. Just a thought about location
Wherever the majority of Kerrycrats decides is ok--I'll be there. I have a preference for Boston because we've got some awesome Kerrycrats that are willing to play sort of hosts, and know the area. Also, I think it would be more fun to see where JK lives and spends his time than go to DC because he works there. I've been to DC (of course it was when I was in high school, but...)but never to Boston. Wherever we go, I know it will be fun, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in, as they say RL.

Cuz I'm going to Scotland the first two weeks of August. Well, you can come, but I won't be here. And I would absolutely love to go to DC. I haven't been there in years. My only rule is that I never do the White House tour when the place is occuppied by Rethugs. Brrrr, too creepy.

73. So do I
I am near Lowell. I could bring food of some sort or another. Then we could go for a tour. Youngish visitors should inquire about hostels. (Actually, all visitors should inquire about hostels, very inexpensive and you can use them all over NE should you decide to extend your trip.)

87. Not a problem in the world with travel!
I am in DC anyway in the summer, no problem THERE, and I could probably take in one or two people in my apartment there--maybe students...?

If it's Boston, that's not a problem either; I like traveling. We NEED to meet.

Oh--and we do need to do some "sightseeing" to a certain individual's office, or rent a conference room and get him to come there. If I may say so, we are a group of smart and fun people--the best kind to be around. It's possible that Senator Kerry might enjoy hearing from us diehards. :)

Who's been DYING to come to DC this summer. I am seriously thinking about applying to be a summer intern in John's office. Even if that doesn't happen, though, I'd still love to come visit for a week or two. I've been saving money, so it might happen.

We should totally meet! I'm sure we'd find plenty to, uh, talk about

91. Well, so am I
I just fully expect to be in DC this summer, or at the very least, nearby in Maryland. I haven't yet selected an apartment because this isn't 100% definite, just about 98 or 99 percent.

And yes, we'd have plenty to talk about. I'm no Linda Tripp either if you take my meaning... ;)

I do hope I will have met with Kerry before that time. It would be of great benefit in getting him involved with some part of the event. The problem right now is that I'm having to use weekends only to work on my software architecture documentation. There are two separate things; a tabulator and an auditable DRE. (I would love to go back to paper ballots and hand counting, but I really don't think that's a realistic goal :(, so if we must have electronic results, they need to be trustworthy.) If you've ever seen software architecture documents... or even if you haven't... well, let's just say it's a LOT of detail. Although his staff was interested in the design, which I do have, I'd want to have something very specific, something ready to be programmed and not just an idea, before I take up anyone's time with it.

(Incidentally, my being in DC has absolutely nothing to do with the project. It was planned long before that and is not dependent on it, but it could turn out to be very beneficial.)

If we decide on DC, I will be more than happy to help with arranging this proposed trip, accommodations, events, etc. (whatever I'm able to do), as soon as I know for certain where I will be on each day of the summer. There is one week in the summer when I must be in New York for a conference, and I'll need to find out when it is.

I'm all for this; this is a great idea. A fun sightseeing event AND a brainstorming/idea-swapping session. We so need to get Kerry in on this if at all possible. I'm serious; there are a lot of very smart people in this forum with a lot of good ideas and insights.

92. I don't know when I'll know if I can get that internship
But I really do plan on making a trip this summer -- I actually have the funds to do it, so why not?

I'm a sightseer by nature, but GAWD, if real honest to God in the flesh John Kerry was part of the deal, I would be there in a New York minute. Obviously, if I'm chosen as an intern, I'm sure I'll meet him anyway (SQUEEEE!!!!), but regardless, I do so very much want to come to DC this summer.
