Campaign Photogs Launch Website Of Personal Favorites
January 13, 2005
By Jay DeFoore
As the 2004 presidential campaign came to a close, several photographers who had covered Senator John Kerry's failed presidential bid were sitting around plotting their next moves and trying to soak in all they had seen and done. Someone, probably David Burnett, commented that the group should create a Web site to showcase their favorite campaign moments.
That Web site has finally been created.
Don't Photo, as it's called (it's a long story, which Burnett explains here), brings together the personal favorites of some of the best photographers working the political beat: Stephen Crowley, Jay L. Clendenin, CJ Gunther, Gerald Herbert, Kenneth Jarecke, Nancy Lee, Michael Robinson-Chavez, Dina Rudick, Brian Snyder, Pete Souza, Justin Sullivan, Andrea Bruce Woodall and Jim Young.
Search the site and you'll find classic (and sometimes bizarre) moments like Souza's picture of a man, seemingly oblivious that his pants have fallen to his ankles, waiting to shake hands with Kerry.
Gunther and Snyder built the site, which is well worth a quick tour (just skip the silly Flash intro). Burnett says it best in his opening essay:
"As photographers, spending months on the road with the candidates, the staff, the Secret Service, and each other, creates a certain bond, a camaraderie. And when it's all over, no matter who the winner, we all find a little nostalgia for the late nights on the plane, the freezing mornings in the van, the scathing heat of a sweaty summer event. The campaigns are over now, but the images live on. Enjoy these photographs as they represent the favorites of the people who created them."

I think that single moment did more to endear John Kerry to Massholes than 20 damn years in the Senate. Now I'm going to go cry again. That was so sad.
I watched this on local TV cuz the cable dudes were making me angry and I wanted to wallow. I remember the cable dudes talked about Marvin who got a big round of applause when he inspected the podium for his boss.
Who was Marvin? The cable dudes called him John Kerry's body guy. (I wonder if he puts that down on his IRS forms?) He did what ever thing needed doing, from getting hairbrushes to, I guess, inspecting podiums. He's still with Kerry, I saw reference to him getting the boss Chinese at the office back in November in DC. I like Marvin. He's even taller than JK. I'm surprised the photo archive didn't have a Marvin photo.

I was supposed to be in Copley Square that night, but I couldn't get the keys to my brothers place in Back Bay. (That may be the most insufferable line I've ever written. Hmmm note to self, must read "How To Not Come Off Like a Stuck Up Bitch" again.)
It was so sad. I watched it on local TV. The commentator was Natalie Jacobsen. Natalie had once hosted a show that had JK on it as a panelist some 25 or so years ago. She had tears streaming down her cheeks as well. That was one of the most wrenching moments of my life. Fetal position for awhile. No solid food for 3 days. Thank god the Red Sox won so I had something good to fall back on. Deep, long, soul-clearing Sigh!
But I'm much better now. And I'm not bitter, oh no.

He's 6'6", and would go stand at the podium so they could set the mike and the teleprompters just right for someone JK's height. I saw this happen live at a speech I attended. He used to work in a surf shop, which is where Kerry met him. He was JK's driver for a few years until asked to be a personal assistant on the campaign trail.
This meant doindg things like ordering room service, carrying water and drink bottles, pens and sharpies for signing stuff, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for emergency snacks. He'd order some junk food breakfast for himself, and then ask the hotel if they had any yogurt, or granola cereal, or "you-know, stuff older guys like to eat for breakfast" for JK. I thought that was amusing. He'd also be a good one for tossing a football around with out on a tarmack!
I saw this in a documentary about the campaign trail on the Discovery Times channel.

I have met him twice to actually have a conversation with him. I have a picture somewhere of the two of us from a state convention. I was wearing my "Boot Newt" shirt. Looks like I will need to break that puppy back out again too. I don't have that picture digitized, but I should so I can share that too, huh? LOL
