1. Just posted in the thread
Those who bash him now should be openly treated as RW trolls, for in attacking him, they are helping Alito, and messages to the moderators should be worded as such. It is that simple.

2. There's a confirmation
from someone who called his office. They're telling everyone to GET ON THE PHONES to their senators.

Not surprised, but I am soooooooo:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

3. I just came over here to holler really loud about this!
Be still my heart, I sincerely hope he can convince others and pull this off!
Having said that, will it be Kerry's fault if nothing happens?
I don't know whether to be happy or sad; guess we'll have to wait and see.

4. No, it's not his fault.
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 12:12 PM by TayTay
It's the fault of the Senator's who didn't come on board. JK is trying and publicly so. Anyone who bad-mouths him for that is a RW troll of an idiot.

Ahm, btw, My Hero: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

lots of flak from my DH and dad; they've written him off.
I keep telling them, "not so fast!"

6. Need more to the story
The big question is whether Kerry is doing this as a symbolic move, or if there has been any success at changing votes so that Alito can actually be blocked.

10. There are at least three I can think of
Sen. Chafee (R-RI)
Sen Snowe (R-ME)
Sen. Collins (R-ME)

These are 'moderate' Repubs who really have to answer for Alito's views. I am particularly interested in what Chafee does as he is in a real tight spot on this one. (He faces a Rethug in the RI primary who will beat him to death if he votes against Alito. He has a Dem challenger who will beath him to death if he votes for Alito.)

11. It pisses me off to no end that these people are willing to put their
party before our democracy.

Especially when they have their mug all over the TV speaking out
against torture.

I'll contact Chafee for sure!

And Biden - just got notice that I got email from him titled
"Why I Voted Against Alito." ha

I'll call, but do you have any suggestions what would be most effective to say?

13. Please vote to filibuster Judge Alito
His record shows that he will not stand up for American's civil rights, civil liberties or even the basic right for people to decide their own medical care. In view of this, I ask that you stand up and vote to block this ill-chosen nominee from getting to the SCOTUS.

15. I called Biden's office, spoke to whoever answered and
told them I hope he supports a fillibuster against Alito.

The lady told me "Thank you, I'll pass your message along."

Do you really think that does any good, that it matters?
Just like all of the petitions I sign, I wonder...

Now to call Chafee...

26. Chaffee was endorsed by NARAL
wasn't he? I'm sure he will vote no. Filibuster is another story, but I don't see why not. What would he have to lose? If worse came to worse, he could always switch party affiliation. We've been begging him to do so forever anyway.
Speaking of which; I honestly think Jeffords would be game to filibuster. Possibly as the deciding no vote for cloture.
The holdouts most likely are;
Nelson NE
Johnson
Pryor
Lincoln
Landrieu
Lieberman
Conrad
Feinstein

Just my guess, but they're the most logical ones to not want to filibuster. I'm calling each of them including the NE Reps and Jeffords.

    Bah (none / 0)

I hate half of my Senators. I called both, and Hillary's assistant said flat out there wasn't going to be a filibuster.

Why can't New York elect a liberal?

37. I rec'd and commented and it's the top diary now!
I responded to some of the cynical posters who inferred that he was either sabotaging Reid (see Tay Tay's story on how all Reid does is plot to stop John Kerry -- "oh no, not him again"), or that he is only doing this to get attention since the filibuster won't work.

I said it's about principle even if we lose. Dems need to fight and hard, even if red state "Democrats" prevent the filibuster.

If anyone else wants to do it, the cost is $39.95 plus .89 per word (your name and address count as words). It cost me $94. and it was the best $94. I've ever spent. This is our Supreme Court.

I'll telephone the others.

More Democrats Get Behind Alito Nomination
Jan 26 2:02 PM US/Eastern

Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, whose confirmation seems certain in the Republican-run Senate, padded his modest Democratic support Thursday with endorsements by Sens. Robert Byrd and Tim Johnson.

Alito already was assured the votes of the 55 Republicans in the 100- member chamber _ enough to be put over the top _ when West Virginia's Byrd and Johnson of South Dakota joined Nebraska's Ben Nelson in saying they'll vote yes.
