OMG, Byrd is supporting Alito? |
|
I am really discouraged. I can't defend these votes by Dems. I just can't do it. I am holding on by a thread here.

3. He is up for reelection in a Red State. |
|
For many WV voters this may only be about God and saving babies. This is the way it has been presented. He doesn't have to repeat the repub talking points though.
If we didn't need his votes on other matters, I would say, he needs to retire.

4. He is VERY conservative - I know he has been given a pass on DU |
|
because of his stance on the war, but he is who he is: a very conservative old school Democrats who like conservative judges, very against liberal judges and very homophobic.
We dont get his votes on a number of other subjects, you know.

8. Even with all that, I would have thought that with his |
|
role as a person thought to be on expert on the constitution that he might oppose him because Alito would approve giving too much of the legislature's powers to the executive. That was the key reason he cited in voting against the IWR that it gave the President Congress's authority to go to war.
Maybe Kerry or Kennedy can convince him. Bush will find another conservative pro-life judge. But we should at least fight one who wants to change the balance of power to the degree he does.

7. It is always amazing to see how liberal blogs give a pass to Byrd |
|
His vote should be no surprise to anybody, but I understand that some people would not see this, given the positive feedback DU, kos, and others give.
I was amazed a few days ago that some people could think that Byrd would lead the filibuster. I guess next time a similar vote happens, there will be as surprised as today. They just cant remember that Byrd was the only Democrat to support the FMA.

that Alito may be transformed once he becomes a Justice. WTF?
I'm sorry, I like Byrd, but today he is wrong not only for West Virginians but for all Americans and our Democracy.
