JK is going to have to do this alone - fuck Harry Reid
"But senators from both parties -- including Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid -- described Kerry's efforts as an uphill battle, at best.

"Everyone knows there are not enough votes to support a filibuster," Reid told Reuters."

I've half a mind to post this in GD.

:grr: NICE SUPPORT he's getting from the rest of the fucking Dem caucus. Durbin's snark deeply disappointed me too:

"But Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, who is in charge of rounding up his Democratic colleagues for key votes, Thursday played down the possibility of a filibuster.

"One of the first responsibilities of someone in Congress is to learn how to count," the Illinois Democrat said. "Having made a count, I have come to the conclusion it is highly unlikely that a filibuster would succeed."

WTF?

1. Guess the self-proclaimed tough guy WIMPED OUT!
What a TOAD. What is wrong with these Democrats? I'm really starting to hate my own party.

2. You know, I think some of the Dem's enjoy being the minority
party. Its easier and you can always blame the Republicans. Unfortunately, we have a lot of self serving officials. Byrd, from what I've been told is the king of pork and I suppose his constituents enjoy the benefits of this pork. He needs repub votes for these things. I find it hard to believe that our leaders really aren't leaders at all.

3. Wasn't that Durbin quote pre- Kerry and Kennedy push
The media may well be playing games with this by not giving the time frame.

It really sounds from Kerry's speech today that he is trying to get some of the libertarian conservatives. Whole sections of his speech that dealt with privacy should bother them. (The look on his face when he quotes Alito as saying you don't expect privacy in a hotel was priceless.) Some of these people are concerned with domestic spying so who knows, he may be trying to shake out some votes on that side.

4. I think the latest is that BOTH Reid and Durbin are NO on cloture
I saw a quote somewhere by Reid that he doesn't think we can block Alito BUT this is a chance for Dems to show where they really stand. Or something like that. So looks like he's on our side now, at least as far as the vote.

5. He realized he could not vote for cloture
but at the same time, he has spent a lot of time making sure everybody understood it was not HIS idea.

However, it seems that Durbin and Boxer were among those pushing for the filibuster even if it was an uphill battle.

6. Durbin was among those who wanted a filibuster.
However, he is right. It is clear that the votes are not there. The numbers of Democrats voting for the filibuster will be a sign of the force of the progressives compared to the conservatives in the party.
