Did you all see this? CNN calls Kerry "Gulfstream Liberal" |
|
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/1/28/19128/3363CNN calls Kerry a "Gulfstream Liberal" by blueday Sat Jan 28, 2006 at 07:01:28 PM EST
Last night on Lou Dobb's show, CNN had a headline of "Gulfstream Liberal" superimposed on the image of Sen Kerry. A lot has been said of the efforts to tarnish progressives and liberals as whiny and wimpy by the traditional media. And judging from last night's CNN episode, it's not hard to be convinced that the traditional media including Fox news wannabe, CNN, is on a tear to slime us.
What I fear the most is the way they help frame issues and the image of Democrats by their latent messages in the minds of the American people.
Here is the link to CNN's sliming of Kerry. It's a short clip, but the message is clear.

Contact CNN and Lou Dobbs, and urge them to stop providing a platform for conservative misinformation

CNN has exhibited an increasingly conservative bias in the last 5 years. The short lead in to the story on Senator John Kerry's return to the US to more effectively lead a filibuster was full of RW themes. The words over the Senator's image were "Gulfstream Liberal" and it was said he was returning from an exclusive Swiss resort.
Senator Kerry was with a bipartisan group of Senators who along with many people from the administration were representing the United States at a presigious world economic conference. Senator Kerry, who is the ranking member on the small business committee and a member of the Finance committee, has attended and contributed to these conferences for years. You may have noticed his firm grasp of both foreign policy and economic issues in the Presidential debates.
Your wording makes it sound as though he had been on vacation. This contrasts with CNN's coverage of Senator John McCain, who in a story on his call not to eliminate war with Iran as an option, was said to have been attending a world economic conference with leaders from many countries.
They were in the same place: Why was one attending an important conference while the other at an exclusive Swiss resort?

8. You know something, though? |
|
It isn't that it's specifically "conservative" bias, for conservative can mean many things. It's rude, right-wing, and unprofessional. CNN is making a joke of itself by employing the likes of William Bennett, Glenn Beck, and Ann Coulter -- three people who seem to have no other skills besides making cheap shots, although Bennett at least knows how to make money by publishing anthologies and attaching his name to them.
CNN also echoes the snotty Scott McClellan comment on Friday. I don't know if any of you caught the White House briefing on C-SPAN or the clips shown on Keith Olbermann's show, but McClellan made a cheap shot at Kerry's comments and opined that Kerry was at a five-star ski resort. A member of the press pointed out that Kerry wasn't there to ski (i.e., it was the Davos economic summit).
So besides contacting CNN, don't forget to contact the White House about Scott McClellan's unprofessional, misleading, and just plain rude comments. 202-456-1111.
I DESPISE McClellan.

10. Contacting the White House seems useless |
|
They are totally classless -
Contrast Kerry's behavior in his concession speech, at Bush's innaugral, and in all his trips representing the United States abroad to rudeness shown to the world by Bush and Cheney.
McClellan could easily have said that Kerry's move was futile because they had the votes - but that it washis priviledge as a Senator to call for a filibuster. What's strange is they gain nothing by smearing him - when the truth (he was at a conference) was so obvious. If they felt he was powerless, they would ignore him. They obviously see him as a potential threat, as they have for 4 decades. They risk though giving him more visibility - his speech on Friday was brilliant in laying out the attacks on privacy that Bush and Alito are behind.
CNN covered Kerry's ME trip more than I would have expected. His debate answers which were great when said appear even better as time passes.

20. Go ahead and complain to the Shite House. |
|
That's shite in the Irish sense.
You might not get McClellan or anyone else to change his behavior, but you will tell someone within the enemy camp (a volunteer, perhaps) how such boorish behavior plays in the country.
Also, as for their nastiness and attempts to disempower Kerry, we have to remember these are vindictive bastards. They don't just want to win, they want revenge. I suppose it's faith-based sin.

7. CNN had McCain on today, laughing about the filibuster attempt |
|
and suggesting this was a political stunt. He was real arrogant and when he was done the CNN announcer nodded in agreement and a bit of disgust. I tell you what, I have never been so shocked as I am over this coverage. It's like Goliath trying to slay David. You know what, we have no unbiased media any longer. We have no journalists any longer. We are left with a corporate owned informational outlet that is all about money and nothing else. You know why they are doing this to Kerry, it's because they can not understand someone standing up for what is right and principled. They want Alita because they can see a power grab and more money for them it.

11. I agree, and for naive little me, utterly shocking |

Since we have been a big part of this filibuster attempt, any Kerry bashing feels like a punch in my stomach, too. He is trying to do the people's business, and when not just the WH and GOP, but the so called objective media treat him like this, they're doing it to the American people, too. They're saying that dissent will NOT be tolerated, and in fact, should be made fun of, belittled, reduced to a chuckle by a bubble headed dingbat.
But, you know what? I've now seen the truth for what it is: that the media wants the STATUS QUO, and nobody should rock that boat, and I disagree. So we're going to have to do a work around. And that's the blogs.
As I said yesterday, the filibuster attempt was not launched from a place. It was launched from cyberspace. It was launched through e-mail and blogging. But the numbskulls in the Big Media still think it's 2001, before the power of blogs came to fruition. The revolution has NOT been televised. CNN is an irrelevant dinosaur! And to think of how I used to think of them, when I lived in Atlanta, and forked out the $20 for the VIP tour of their studios, thinking how great they were. No more.

if you don't mind. I agree with you about the blogs, more and accurate information comes from the blogs, than from the cable news outlets and regular TV stations. Right now, I can't stand to watch any cable news any longer- especially CNN. I suppose because they have let me down more than the others. They use to be a respected news source, but not any longer.

(I hope it gets under his skin)
I am writing to express my concern about the nomination of Sam Alito to serve as a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States.
Please stand up for civil rights and the principles of democracy now before those who espouse right wing ideology render Congress ineffectual as an equal branch of government, unable to exercise the people’s will. This is an important and defining moment, standing up is not worth it. Please fight now with Senator John Kerry and the Democrats who are fighting for democracy.
You must see the value in opposing someone who will tear at the fabric of our democracy. It should be clear that this is not about being a Democrat or Republican, it's about principles and conviction. Without either, what difference does it make?
This is about the country, the rights of all Americans, not just your constituents. Your vote will impact me, my neighbors, and friends and family across the country. This is a national vote. So please consider joining the fight to filibuster Sam Alito. Mr. Alito’s hedged responses to the line of questioning during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings were disturbing, and given his past position on granting executive powers, I hope you will give serious thought to rejecting his appointment. Equally important is his obvious support for signing statements that are currently and liberally being used to place the president above the law. This should be alarming to you personally since one such statement was recently attached to your torture ban, which receive tremendous bipartisan Congressional support, to ensure human rights are not violated in the name of capturing and prosecuting terrorists.
If you value civil rights, I urge you to take a stand. It matters now because what's at stake is the foundation of our democracy and the ability of members of Congress to do the job the people elected them to do.
Thank you in advance for seriously considering this request.
edited to add: everyone should send him a note requesting that he support Kerry and join the filibuster.
